Revisiting John Steinbeck’s
Contributions To American Letters
John Steinbeck was a highly respected American writer who won the Nobel Prize
in Literature in 1962. For many people, his stories about the Great Depression and
the Dust Bowl migrations best represented his true writing subject and style. That
crucial shift in his ction, from social critique and commentary to something
more profoundly involved and compassionate, is a testament to his literary and
social commitment.

Growing up in Salinas, California, at the dawn of the 20th century when the
working classes were starting to take on a more active role in social progress,
Steinbeck learned to appreciate the farming town and the dignity of human labor
that was in nitely connected to the earth and the surroundings. This a nity will
nd its way into his best novels, solidifying his place in the literary canon. But
more importantly, his natural empathy for the dispossessed and underprivileged,
having worked with them, was the source of his ction’s sincerity.
The Dust Bowl trilogy, composed of the three Great Depression novels, namely
“In Dubious Battle,” “Of Mice and Men,” and “The Grapes of Wrath,” is a prime
example of this magnanimity to give voice to the marginalized. His literary
“environments” are peopled with characters that re ect the real struggles of the
migrant worker. Many writers took note of the necessarily uncomfortable feeling
his novels provoked after the rich and the fortunate read them.

His “portraits” of su ering people because of social strati cation and
persecution reverberate across time and locations. He successfully integrated
stark realism and literary aesthetics into a deep understanding of the human
condition.

MJ and Kobe: From the Same Cloth
From Jerry Stackhouse to Vince Carter, to Tracy McGrady to Dwyane Wade, a lot
of players have been compared to Michael Jordan. Some have even been called the
next MJ. But among all these stars, only one player has a legitimate claim. And
that player is Kobe Bryant.
MJ and Kobe are roughly the same height. They play the same position. They have
the same skillset. They see the game the same way. They were both under the

mentorship of the great Phil Jackson.
MJ in his physical prime, meaning MJ in
the 1980s could probably run faster and
jump higher, and score more points
than Kobe. But that was the MJ who was
still looking for a way to win
championships. Kobe when he was
beginning in the league was talented as
well, and hardworking. It took a couple
of years for both players to evolve into a leader.
When they cultivated the mental
fortitude required to win titles, both MJ
and Kobe changed their game to reserve
energy. They also became calmer and
more collected, and would hit game
winners more often. They both adapted
an assassin-like attitude that became
the trademark of their game.

Should Bears rookie QB Mitch
Trubisky start in the season opener?
Just how high was the Chicago Bears on Mitch Trubisky? The Bears initially
owned the third overall pick of the 2017 draft but chose to move one spot higher
by o ering the third selection and three additional picks to the San Francisco

49ers. With the second overall pick, Chicago selected Trubisky, the North
Carolina standout.

And after a strong preseason debut, it is clear that the Bears made the right move
in selecting its quarterback of the future. A closer look at his performance would
even suggest that Trubisky is already the Bears’ quarterback of today. There are
pundits and former Bears players, including “Iron Mike” Ditka, who state that
Trubisky is ready to be the team’s full-time starter by the season opener.
Should he start, though?
Coming into the preseason, it was Mike Glennon, signed to a fresh three-year
deal, who was penciled in as Chicago’s starter at quarterback. And while Glennon
has struggled thus far, coach John Fox has still maintained that Glennon remains
atop the team’s quarterback depth chart. Even Trubisky has insisted that the
Bears is still Glennon’s team.
While numerous fans would love to see Trubisky start, he would probably be
better o being eased in to give him a feel of the professional stage, which is far
di erent from the college level where he excelled. After all, most all-time great
quarterbacks started their career o the bench.

Every Jordan Needs a Pippen
Basketball is a team sport and,
regardless of who a team’s star is, the
reality remains: One man can’t win
games. A person like Michael Jordan
certainly makes a di erence, but
without the other four players on the
court and those on the bench, even a
marquee player will eventually be too
burned out to matter. Some teams have even opted just to allow a star to get his
way, choosing instead to act on all other players. That star will tire, and once he
is, he can’t do what he brags he’ll do. If all other players are prevented from
scoring, the team’s score, that which matters most, will most likely be pitiful.

This is why the Jordan-Pippen
partnership of the ‘90s was so
important. Pippen was lethal, but
everybody knew that Jordan was
Chicago’s top guy. Pippen confused
many of their opponents because if he’s
not supporting MJ or doing more than
solid defense or racking up one more
steal, he’s ready to shoot. By being so, he allowed Jordan to be even greater.
“Nothing like someone having your back so you can worry less and work more,”
his Airness might have said. One journalist even said very clearly: Pippen enabled
Jordan to be a champion.

Chicago’s Finest: The All-Time Best
NBA Players From The Windy City
Chicago has, for generations, produced some of the nest basketball players to
grace the hardwood. Countless gyms and outdoor courts litter the city, where
these hoopsters were able to hone their skills and learn how to grit and grind all
the way to the NBA.
Some of these players are the following:
Isiah Thomas
No other player personi es Windy City basketball the same way that Isiah
Thomas does. Until now, he still gives credit to the time he spent growing up in
Chicago as one of the reasons he became successful in the NBA.

One of the greatest point guards of all time, he led the Detroit Pistons to back-to-
back championships in 1989 and 1990.

Dwyane Wade
The future Hall-of-Famer made headlines last year when he chose to go home to
Chicago and play for the Bulls instead of resigning with the team where he got his
three championships, Miami Heat. He is highly regarded in Chicago because of his
humanitarian contributions to the city even while he was playing for the Heat.
George Mikan
George Mikan was the rst dominant big man in the NBA. He won ve titles with
the Minneapolis Lakers during the 1950s. And because it was nearly impossible
for opponents to stop him at the time, NBA had to tweak some of its rules,
including introducing a wider paint area and the shot clock, to balance out the
competition.

The little-known bene ts of boating
Riding on a boat is often viewed as the vessel’s ability to transport cargo and
passengers from one place to the next. However, boating has other bene ts
beyond the obvious utilitarian purpose.

Boating can be a hobby that could add a fresh dimension to a person’s lifestyle.
Research has shown that it can improve a person’s total well-being.
Going on board a boat and traveling to other places induces a gentle adrenaline
rush that allows the body to burn fat, the heart to pump well-oxygenated blood,
and for otherwise idle muscles to move. Being on a boat also allows one to have a
fair ll of sunlight. Going on a leisurely boat ride is the perfect opportunity to
increase the amount of vitamin D in the body.
With the smooth breeze that only the ocean can give, a person can actually
increase the air intake capacity of the lungs, which altogether makes the lungs
and diaphragm stronger, allowing for better breathing.
Traveling on water in general makes for a good way exercise one’s sense of
equilibrium, which when improved, could be very advantageous in going through
various tasks on land. Navigating throughout the ocean also develops a better
sense of direction and mental mapping. This, in turn, increases one’s survival
skills.
With such bene ts to the mind and body, boating can be an activity which is both
enjoyable and bene cial for a person. Truly it’s one hobby that is very much
worth taking up.
