4. Something about our equipment: We only use calibrated and certified infrared camera’s with the highest resolution, this is very important to do infrared inspections on aircrafts. 6. What is Thermography? Water and composite materials have different thermal properties. When out of thermal balance (equilibrium), after a heating or cooling process, a temperature difference is observed between water and composite. 7. Use of Thermograph Inspection on aircrafts Goals for you as maintenance department: To have an early indication of possible problem areas at the start of every c-check. The inspection has the purpose to analyze, interpret and report hidden moisture on all composite parts of the aircraft selected which you selected to have the focus on. Motivation This motivation is from a customer who is using this method of working several years now; “ Before the introduction of a thermograph inspection, at the early start of a c-check, we were more than once “surprised” with findings at a later stage”. “ These late findings gave us a lot of extra costs and/or delays which we wanted to reduce to the maximum”. 9. Actual practice The best moment to do this inspection method is directly after landing, otherwise our infrared camera can not localize the spots. It is of course possible in a hanger but that’s very labour-intensive because we have to simulate a difference in temperature with heating blankets. 10. Advantage of having the focus on possible problem areas at the start of the inspection: Almost instantaneously you can have your MRO carrying out a regular inspection on that problem area. This can be either the planned inspection belonging to the work package according maintenance program or an extra inspection according AMM/SRM not belonging to this particular c-check. Meanwhile you were are able to investigate the availability for possible spare parts and investigate the repair capabilities and possibilities. You can map all critical areas and anticipate in future checks (eliminate surprises).
