Personal Narrative: My Peace Corps Experience
One of the hardest academic challenges I had faced was during my Peace Corps services as a
TEFL instructor at Sichuan Tourism University. After working with the students for over a year, I
had realized there was a huge gap in their understanding of human reproduction. In China, especially
rural China, there is an extremely sensitive and embarrassing subject for parents, friends, and
teachers to educate others on. I was growing concern about how little my students understood this
topic, as I had gone with three of my students during my time of services to abortion clinics (which
are located everywhere as they are very common thing in China). I had decided that many of students
would benefit from a few classes on sexual intercourse that would

Reflection Paper On Peace Corps
On Wednesday November 15, 2017, I attended the "Peace Corps: Making a Difference in
Communities Abroad, in the Lives of Volunteers and in the U.S." talk for International Education
Week. I had always been curious about the workings of the Peace Corps, and I thought that
learning more about it would be beneficial and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I
learned about this incredible organization. The theme of the talk was "making the most of your
world." Anne Tatarsky, the local Peace Corps recruiter, was the main speaker and she introduced a
round table of other past Peace Corps volunteers there to share their experiences. Tatarsky began by
introducing what exactly the people in the Peace Corps do. She showed just how far the...show more

For one, there is a major focus on training. Before their two year commitment, volunteers receive
three months of training. The skills that are picked up through the Peace Corps will transfer into
all aspects of life. Additionally, after the completion of the commitment, volunteers receive an
$8,000 transition fund when they return to the states. Moreover, there are many federal
employment benefits that Peace Corps volunteers benefit from. It is a great way to get your foot
in the door to a federal agency. Not to mention the Grad school and student loan benefits. All
around, the life experience that the Peace Corps offers, can only enrich your life. The panelists
acknowledged that volunteers need to get rid of their preconceived notions, and go into the
experience with no expectations. What you think you want will change. They did a great job of
pointing out the need to be realistic. There will be insects, you will get sick, you will be shocked
by something, and you will get lonely. However, the benefits outweighed the downsides for every
single one of them. Attending this discussion had a profound effect on me. The Peace Corps has
always been in the back of my mind as an option after college, but I never saw it as being realistic.
Learning more about it and connecting with a recruiter took the potential experience out of the
dream world and put into the real world. I would love to go to a Spanish speaking

I remember the moment I learned about the Peace Corps and the overwhelming desire I had to join.
That was fifteen years ago and my longing to be a part of your mission is just as strong as it was all
those years ago. I have been working for corporations since I was 14 years old and during my career
I had convinced myself that I was making lives easier for the employees and in turn they went
home and took care of their families with a little less stress. If I could make their day a little bit
better by giving them the tools to do their job more efficient with less pressure, I did well. I was
raising a family and needed the salary of the corporations to provide for them even though my
heart was less and less in it. Now that my children are young adults I find that I ask myself everyday
how can I help people, how can I contribute, and on a selfish note, how can I feel good every night
when I go to sleep....show more content...
At that moment, I knew that I was destined to help people and if I could be a career volunteer, I
would. Then I began working with the Red Cross and was deployed to Louisiana to help with the
floods as a Government Liaison working with the Louisiana Parishes and government officials.
Here I learned that La had a very different government, executing a home rule state causing me to
adapt and understand their customs. It was where I belonged, where my best work was done, my
compassion, my strength, my skills, technical and social were all tapped into and not only did I feel
wonderful but everyone I worked with and every person I helped knew they mattered to me. I
perform better when I am faced with constant challenges, always evolving situations and high

Capstone International hosted Around the World in 60 Minutes Thursday allowing students the
opportunity to talk with Peace Corps volunteers.
Volunteers at the event returned from Guyana, Ukraine, Nigeria and Gabon.
"The Peace Corps provides an experience that no amount of money could pay for. You can go and
be a tourist in any country, but to go and get to live like a local person and truly get to experience
the culture, money cannot buy that kind of experience," said Brad Hodges a Peace Corps volunteer
and ESL instructor at The University of Alabama.
Hodges served his 27 month commitment in Gabon, a small country in west Africa, working as an
ESL teacher in a middle school.

Capstone International wrote a grant to the Peace Corps to pay for my tuition and in return she

Like Hodges, O'Dell also entered the Peace Corps mid–career. She had previously worked as an
international special education teacher and used her experience to work in education while in
Swaziland.
Kaitlyn Nott a junior majoring in economics from Daegu, South Korea is currently going through
the application process to join the Peace Corps.
"I am hoping to eventually work in either economic or social development, so I think the Peace
Corps offeres a really good opportunity to go into a developing country and be able to really
immerse myself into their culture," she said.
Nott's expected graduation date is December 2017 and she hoping to join the Peace Corps

community development or education.

I have a strong commitment to serving in a community development. Over the years, i have
demonstrated this service by serving in the United States Peace Corps in West Africa and with the
Black Graduate Student Organization working in the urban areas of Gainesville. During my Peace
Corps experience, i identifed common problems in communities rethat improved sustainable
agricultural practices and generate income through agribusiness ventures. Along with this
experience, my educational training as a professional has prepared me in formal, nonformal, and

Advancement of minorities in higher education has many barriers. As it relates to colleges and
universities, true ethical issues consistently remain dormant in some cases (Wolfe & Freeman,
2013). For example, Jackson (2001) stated that there is a small pool of qualified candidates to select
from because of the percentage of degrees being awarded. For example, "2011, approximately 13%
of earned doctorate were awarded to underrepresentation minorities (U.S. Department of Education,
National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). Therefore, with these limited numbers the potential
candidates are not available. Within my chosen field minorities' involvement in agriculture remains
limited. In addition, recent demographic trends estimate that ethnic minority populations are steadily
increasing, and in some areas are reaching the tipping point to become the majority. For this reason, I
am primarily interested in bringing more awareness in agricultural and extension education that
focuses on diverse communities that are normally uninvolved in the opportunities in the agricultural
industry. My research interests focus on improving and maintaining a strong and valuable
agricultural system that generagte more minority participation with future

The Peace Corps, formed in 1961, was a highly influential group of young Anti–Communist
graduates who volunteered their time across the country to bring modernism and democracy to
third world countries, stop communism from spreading, and changed the way the world thought
about Americans. When World Wat II finally came to a close , many agreed that it would be a
good idea to organize the youth of America and have them volunteer in foreign countries. Many
bills had been proposed by the United State Congress, such as one early bill penned by Senator
Hubert, although the idea was first credited by Senator Brian McMahan, who first had the idea of an
"army" of young Americans to as "missionaries of democracy." Although racked with difficult

Peace Corps service presents major physical, emotional, and intellectual challenges. In the space
below, please provide a few paragraphs explaining your reasons for wanting to serve as a Peace
Corps Volunteer and how you plan to overcome the various challenges associated with Peace Corps
service. This essay is the writing sample Peace Corps uses to assess your professionalism and
maturity as a candidate. Please spend time editing your essay/writing sample (4,000 characters, or
approximately 500 words). I first considered Peace Corps service in 2008, after learning my Aunt
and Uncle had served as a couple for 5 years in Africa. Having only been eleven, I knew I was not
mature or old enough for such a commitment. However, as I grew so did my desire to make a
difference a global scale would not dissipate and that someday I would fulfill this inner call. I have
always been a service–oriented person; from my early days volunteering in a local nursing home, to
leadership positions in service organizations throughout high school, and volunteering abroad in

I've lived without running water or electricity for an extension of time. During these chaotic times,
there were moments when I felt too overwhelmed, I used mindfulness techniques and meditation to
return to an equanimous and positive mind. For intellectual challenges, I draw upon my past and
current experiences as an EMT and break the problem down into smaller, manageable parts. I cannot
predict these challenges, but I will face them with resilience, flexibility, and an optimistic

There's a tired saying "walk a mile in my shoes..." that's been modified to all extremes. It's a perfect
tag line to start the discussion of one's first–hand opinion of the Peace Corps volunteer experience.
It's unquestionably true that it's difficult for others to accurately grasp the picture of an
experience unless he or she has either encountered it also or at least specific knowledge of the
scenario. Our job, as Peace Corps volunteers, is diverse. It cannot be adequately described or
summed up in a few words. Yes, we can sarcastically attempt, however, there is remarkably much
more to what we accomplish. Regardless of the country or program in which you've been placed or
your given job description. As Peace Corps Volunteers we are:

Born and raised in a developing country called Rwanda, it didn't be an excuse of defining what I can
achieve in life. I didn't let the starting point define the finish line. Neither did it affect the type of
change and give back I want to make on this world. I looked ahead and considered life as a process
of the overcoming the challenges every single day. I experienced the lack of access to health care
since childhood, and I have got to see that it is one the crucial human needs that have to be satisfied,
that's why I went for Biomedical Sciences and Pre–Medicine.
After working with Peace Corps over the period of two years in high school from 2011–2013, where
I initiated and facilitated two 5–day–self–empowerement leadership camps for 50 campers each to
exemplify leadership skills. I mentored the campers about the goals and individual leadership skills
to help them understand the process of the camp and how to identify and prevent negative peer
pressure. I acted as a bridge between campers and Peace Corps Volunteers by providing both parties
with cultural understanding of each other. The experience of public speaking, writing and

The Peace Corps: an altruistic propaganda tool In the age of "Camelot," President Kennedy was a
young, fresh, opponent running against his off–putting fellow candidate Richard Nixon. Kennedy
represented not only a fresh start to a rejuvenated government, but also provided a strong platform
on which Americans could find a way to serve the nation themselves. Although the Peace Corps was
an ideological call for Americans to serve their country, President Kennedy ultimately used it as an
international propaganda tool. The concept of the Peace Corps was simple. The idea actually
originated under Roosevelt in the 1930s and went through some format changes before Hubert
Humphrey utilized the specific name of Peace Corps in the late 1950s (Giglio...show more content...
Kennedy spoke to students on the campus of the University of Michigan. In his short speech, he
challenged the students with the idea of going abroad to make use of their skills in
underprivileged countries. A petition was signed by 1,000 students willing to serve in such a
capacity, which, no doubt, fueled the concept further for Kennedy (Peace Corps). A few weeks
later, at the San Francisco Cow Palace, Kennedy proposed establishing a "national peace agency" if
elected (Kennedy, Speech...Cow Palace). Kennedy utilized the concept two months later in what
would arguably become one of the top speeches ever written. In his inaugural address, Kennedy
pointedly promoted the concept in his most famous words, "Ask not what your country can do for
you –ask what you can do for your country" (Kennedy, Inaugural Address). A few days after his
inaugural, Kennedy placed R. Sargent Shriver in charge of the organizing and shaping of the
group. Shriver then returned a seven step memorandum to the president in February of 1961. The
Peace Corps was ultimately established by executive order on March 1, 1961 and approved as a
permanent federal agency by the U.S. Congress on September 22, 1961 (Peace

It was the same thought process almost every morning on my way to work. There I was, a recent
college graduate driving to a low–paying position that I was certainly overqualified for. While I
knew that the job was temporary, I could not help but think of my former classmates who were
embarking upon careers which offered comfortable salaries and benefits. Feelings of inadequacy,
fear, and self–doubt would overcome me. Yet, as I would begin to ask myself, "what am I doing
with my life," I would merge onto I–496 in Lansing and the answer would come into view. The
Peace Corps billboard read: "Never start a sentence with I should have." It was this same motto that

I was ready for some real work in a foreign country, an opportunity made available through the
Peace Corps. Life in the Peace Corps offers volunteers two options: sink or swim. The former is a
plane ticket home; the latter is the opportunity to grow and share in a culture very different from
one's own. How well a person can adapt in various aspects of his or her daily and professional life
determines the outcome. For the past 16 months I am proud to say that I have been swimming. I
arrived in Cameroon, West Africa with a very basic ability to communicate in French, and have since
forged meaningful relationships with several host–country nationals. In having to almost entirely
change how I eat, dress, and complete household tasks, I have come to understand the values and
practices of another culture. As a Caucasian female living in Cameroon, I am, for the first time in
my life, a part of a very small minority. I experience harassment almost daily, and in certain
instances my credibility has been reduced simply because of my sex. I feel that my first–hand
experiences have given me a better understanding of the implications of discrimination, and will
allow me to better contribute in such an environment. My overall abilities to adapt quickly,
persevere, and make the most in a changing environment will help me overcome challenges faced in
law school. I have been interested in the practice of law for quite some time, and living

only able to put the degree in college to good use but how he was also able to work with foreign
countries helping show that he had the skills and abilities required to work as an ambassador.
This is not the only reason that I would like to help with the Peace Corps however, I just want to

Peace Corps Experience
An experience of a lifetime, this can be defined differently depending on the individual. For me an
experience of a lifetime is filled with breathtaking moments, challenges, laughter, tears, and joy. I
believe that the Peace Corps is an experience of a lifetime. When I first learned about the Peace
Corps and all that it requires I thought it was not for me. I attended an information session during
my freshman year of college and walked away intimidated. The speaker shared her experiences of
living in a foreign country and upstarting businesses and I could not imagine myself doing this. It
was not until my junior year of college that I learned that, in fact, I did have the strength,
independence, and self–motivation that is required for the volunteer position. Deciding to jump on
a plane and spend a semester in Cusco, Peru my junior year of college exposed me to experiences
that I had only dreamed of. This was a time of many firsts including first time out of North America,
first time flying alone, first time communicating in a second language, and first time going to...show

I do not know what all of those challenges will be, but I have faced difficulties before and I look
forward to new challenges that I can grow and learn from. In Peru, I learned that culture shock was
real but I was able to embrace the culture through developing relationships with my host family,
classmates, and community members; actively learning the Spanish language, and self–motivation to
be a part of the community outside of the college I was attending. By doing all of that, I made the
most out of my study abroad experience and was able to grow as a person. While I learned a lot in
Peru, I am not done learning. Our world is filled with so many people and cultures, all that have
something to share and teach and I hope to be exposed at least to a portion of

I chose to do research on the Peace Corps organization. The Peace Corps is a volunteer
organization that accommodates developing nations in need and improves limited skills such as
education. Within the economy sector of society, the Peace Corps includes aspects of both work
and labor. Based on class discussion, occupational impact importance, regarding teachers, their
wages showcases the disparity within the field. Similarities among teachers and those in Peace
Corps are prominent, although Peace Corp volunteers intend on making a difference abroad.
Impoverish global community development is often overlooked in our economy which is why the
Peace Corps would be of interest. Some domestic regions like Burlington, Vermont use local
currencies and time banks in order to restore the value in giving back to the community. The idea for

Peace Corp volunteers improve their social well–being when placed with a host family to bond with.
The bonding sheds a light on the newly intertwined relationship between volunteers and community
residents, thus creating a close family aspect, especially since some volunteers lose significant
contact with their families back home. Not all volunteers are without family contacts as it varies
by location. Some volunteers have a proper cellular signal or internet to contact loved ones back
home, whether it be by bus to the city or with the aided region. Volunteers meet new people who
consistently differ from themselves however, participants are able to learn a lot and create a bridge
of understanding among the resident (Bird et al. 1999). One might think it is hard to be content with
scarce resources in developing countries however, residents of the community cherish social
well–being far more than material well–being. What truly keeps the people in these regions content

The Importance Of Peace Corps In Nursing
The Peace Corps has values which I believe in and would stand for, given the chance. I would like
to be given the chance because I want to partake in educating those in need. I believe that the Peace
Corps can help me do so. For example, the Peace Corps educates the communities in order to ensure
that they will be able to support themselves after the volunteers leave. This is important to me
because it is not enough to simply teach someone how to do things, but to reevaluate that they can
do it themselves. This is what my nursing education has taught me with planning, implementing,
reevaluation and finally discharge of patients. I trust that the Peace Corps is the best environment for
me to develop and make use of my nursing skills. In addition,

see the past events held to try to gain awareness about the Peace Corps. There are multiple events
for career fairs and volunteer/internship fairs throughout the school year. They are hosted at Grand
Valley, Hope, Kendall College of Arts, and Devos place. There are also RPCV/Invitee Social Hours
although not much information is given about what that is exactly. The career fairs are usually
hosted in the fall time and again in the spring. The Peace Corps also attends Grand Valley's event

During the last four years, the Peace Corp has served me as a shining beacon of aspiration and
achievement. It has continually reminded me of the culmination of my undergraduate studies, what
life could possibly look like should I volunteer, and, more significantly, provided a constant reminder
of the reason I am studying: to help others. The Peace Corp is a collective symbolization of my life
experiences, schooling, and general attitudes; volunteering for this historic and breathtaking
organization would be nothing short of life–changing. Now that the Peace Corp has done so much
for me, I would like to return the favor and do something for it. Having been born in Venezuela, I
experienced underdevelopment, poverty, and the associated consequences early in my life. Despite

As a student of political science, this is substantially important. My career aspirations, namely

a rigorous and contextual understanding of the world and its people. Such an understanding is
bred, not by reading from a textbook, but from walking in the same shoes as the people who you

Peace Corps Essay Examples

  • 1. Personal Narrative: My Peace Corps Experience One of the hardest academic challenges I had faced was during my Peace Corps services as a TEFL instructor at Sichuan Tourism University. After working with the students for over a year, I had realized there was a huge gap in their understanding of human reproduction. In China, especially rural China, there is an extremely sensitive and embarrassing subject for parents, friends, and teachers to educate others on. I was growing concern about how little my students understood this topic, as I had gone with three of my students during my time of services to abortion clinics (which are located everywhere as they are very common thing in China). I had decided that many of students would benefit from a few classes on sexual intercourse that would Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflection Paper On Peace Corps On Wednesday November 15, 2017, I attended the "Peace Corps: Making a Difference in Communities Abroad, in the Lives of Volunteers and in the U.S." talk for International Education Week. I had always been curious about the workings of the Peace Corps, and I thought that learning more about it would be beneficial and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I learned about this incredible organization. The theme of the talk was "making the most of your world." Anne Tatarsky, the local Peace Corps recruiter, was the main speaker and she introduced a round table of other past Peace Corps volunteers there to share their experiences. Tatarsky began by introducing what exactly the people in the Peace Corps do. She showed just how far the...show more content... For one, there is a major focus on training. Before their two year commitment, volunteers receive three months of training. The skills that are picked up through the Peace Corps will transfer into all aspects of life. Additionally, after the completion of the commitment, volunteers receive an $8,000 transition fund when they return to the states. Moreover, there are many federal employment benefits that Peace Corps volunteers benefit from. It is a great way to get your foot in the door to a federal agency. Not to mention the Grad school and student loan benefits. All around, the life experience that the Peace Corps offers, can only enrich your life. The panelists acknowledged that volunteers need to get rid of their preconceived notions, and go into the experience with no expectations. What you think you want will change. They did a great job of pointing out the need to be realistic. There will be insects, you will get sick, you will be shocked by something, and you will get lonely. However, the benefits outweighed the downsides for every single one of them. Attending this discussion had a profound effect on me. The Peace Corps has always been in the back of my mind as an option after college, but I never saw it as being realistic. Learning more about it and connecting with a recruiter took the potential experience out of the dream world and put into the real world. • 3. Peace Corps Reflective Essay I remember the moment I learned about the Peace Corps and the overwhelming desire I had to join. That was fifteen years ago and my longing to be a part of your mission is just as strong as it was all those years ago. I have been working for corporations since I was 14 years old and during my career I had convinced myself that I was making lives easier for the employees and in turn they went home and took care of their families with a little less stress. If I could make their day a little bit better by giving them the tools to do their job more efficient with less pressure, I did well. I was raising a family and needed the salary of the corporations to provide for them even though my heart was less and less in it. Now that my children are young adults I find that I ask myself everyday how can I help people, how can I contribute, and on a selfish note, how can I feel good every night when I go to sleep....show more content... At that moment, I knew that I was destined to help people and if I could be a career volunteer, I would. Then I began working with the Red Cross and was deployed to Louisiana to help with the floods as a Government Liaison working with the Louisiana Parishes and government officials. Here I learned that La had a very different government, executing a home rule state causing me to adapt and understand their customs. It was where I belonged, where my best work was done, my compassion, my strength, my skills, technical and social were all tapped into and not only did I feel wonderful but everyone I worked with and every person I helped knew they mattered to me. I perform better when I am faced with constant challenges, always evolving situations and high Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Volunteers at the event returned from Guyana, Ukraine, Nigeria and Gabon. "The Peace Corps provides an experience that no amount of money could pay for. You can go and be a tourist in any country, but to go and get to live like a local person and truly get to experience the culture, money cannot buy that kind of experience," said Brad Hodges a Peace Corps volunteer and ESL instructor at The University of Alabama. Kaitlyn Nott a junior majoring in economics from Daegu, South Korea is currently going through the application process to join the Peace Corps. "I am hoping to eventually work in either economic or social development, so I think the Peace Corps offeres a really good opportunity to go into a developing country and be able to really immerse myself into their culture," she said. Nott's expected graduation date is December 2017 and she hoping to join the Peace Corps immediatly after graduation volunteering somewhere in Asia in either youth development, community development or education. Over the years, i have demonstrated this service by serving in the United States Peace Corps in West Africa and with the Black Graduate Student Organization working in the urban areas of Gainesville. During my Peace Corps experience, i identifed common problems in communities rethat improved sustainable agricultural practices and generate income through agribusiness ventures. As it relates to colleges and universities, true ethical issues consistently remain dormant in some cases (Wolfe & Freeman, 2013). For example, Jackson (2001) stated that there is a small pool of qualified candidates to select from because of the percentage of degrees being awarded. For example, "2011, approximately 13% of earned doctorate were awarded to underrepresentation minorities (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). Therefore, with these limited numbers the potential candidates are not available. Within my chosen field minorities' involvement in agriculture remains limited. In addition, recent demographic trends estimate that ethnic minority populations are steadily increasing, and in some areas are reaching the tipping point to become the majority. For this reason, I am primarily interested in bringing more awareness in agricultural and extension education that focuses on diverse communities that are normally uninvolved in the opportunities in the agricultural industry. My research interests focus on improving and maintaining a strong and valuable agricultural system that generagte more minority participation with future Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Peace Corps Research Paper The Peace Corps, formed in 1961, was a highly influential group of young Anti–Communist graduates who volunteered their time across the country to bring modernism and democracy to third world countries, stop communism from spreading, and changed the way the world thought about Americans. When World Wat II finally came to a close , many agreed that it would be a good idea to organize the youth of America and have them volunteer in foreign countries. Many bills had been proposed by the United State Congress, such as one early bill penned by Senator Hubert, although the idea was first credited by Senator Brian McMahan, who first had the idea of an "army" of young Americans to as "missionaries of democracy." This essay is the writing sample Peace Corps uses to assess your professionalism and maturity as a candidate. Please spend time editing your essay/writing sample (4,000 characters, or approximately 500 words). I first considered Peace Corps service in 2008, after learning my Aunt and Uncle had served as a couple for 5 years in Africa. Having only been eleven, I knew I was not mature or old enough for such a commitment. However, as I grew so did my desire to make a difference a global scale would not dissipate and that someday I would fulfill this inner call. • 8. Research Paper On Peace Corps Volunteers There's a tired saying "walk a mile in my shoes..." that's been modified to all extremes. It's a perfect tag line to start the discussion of one's first–hand opinion of the Peace Corps volunteer experience. It's unquestionably true that it's difficult for others to accurately grasp the picture of an experience unless he or she has either encountered it also or at least specific knowledge of the scenario. Our job, as Peace Corps volunteers, is diverse. It cannot be adequately described or summed up in a few words. Yes, we can sarcastically attempt, however, there is remarkably much more to what we accomplish. Regardless of the country or program in which you've been placed or your given job description. • 9. Peace Corps Application Essay Born and raised in a developing country called Rwanda, it didn't be an excuse of defining what I can achieve in life. I didn't let the starting point define the finish line. Neither did it affect the type of change and give back I want to make on this world. I looked ahead and considered life as a process of the overcoming the challenges every single day. I experienced the lack of access to health care since childhood, and I have got to see that it is one the crucial human needs that have to be satisfied, that's why I went for Biomedical Sciences and Pre–Medicine. After working with Peace Corps over the period of two years in high school from 2011–2013, where I initiated and facilitated two 5–day–self–empowerement leadership camps for 50 campers each to exemplify leadership skills. I mentored the campers about the goals and individual leadership skills to help them understand the process of the camp and how to identify and prevent negative peer pressure. • 11. Jfk Peace Corps Research Paper The Peace Corps: an altruistic propaganda tool In the age of "Camelot," President Kennedy was a young, fresh, opponent running against his off–putting fellow candidate Richard Nixon. Kennedy represented not only a fresh start to a rejuvenated government, but also provided a strong platform on which Americans could find a way to serve the nation themselves. Although the Peace Corps was an ideological call for Americans to serve their country, President Kennedy ultimately used it as an international propaganda tool. The concept of the Peace Corps was simple. The idea actually originated under Roosevelt in the 1930s and went through some format changes before Hubert Humphrey utilized the specific name of Peace Corps in the late 1950s (Giglio...show more content... Kennedy spoke to students on the campus of the University of Michigan. In his short speech, he challenged the students with the idea of going abroad to make use of their skills in underprivileged countries. A petition was signed by 1,000 students willing to serve in such a capacity, which, no doubt, fueled the concept further for Kennedy (Peace Corps). A few weeks later, at the San Francisco Cow Palace, Kennedy proposed establishing a "national peace agency" if elected (Kennedy, Speech...Cow Palace). Kennedy utilized the concept two months later in what would arguably become one of the top speeches ever written. In his inaugural address, Kennedy pointedly promoted the concept in his most famous words, "Ask not what your country can do for you –ask what you can do for your country" (Kennedy, Inaugural Address). A few days after his inaugural, Kennedy placed R. Sargent Shriver in charge of the organizing and shaping of the group. Shriver then returned a seven step memorandum to the president in February of 1961. The Peace Corps was ultimately established by executive order on March 1, 1961 and approved as a permanent federal agency by the U.S. Congress on September 22, 1961 (Peace Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. It was the same thought process almost every morning on my way to work. There I was, a recent college graduate driving to a low–paying position that I was certainly overqualified for. While I knew that the job was temporary, I could not help but think of my former classmates who were embarking upon careers which offered comfortable salaries and benefits. Feelings of inadequacy, fear, and self–doubt would overcome me. Yet, as I would begin to ask myself, "what am I doing with my life," I would merge onto I–496 in Lansing and the answer would come into view. I was ready for some real work in a foreign country, an opportunity made available through the Peace Corps. Life in the Peace Corps offers volunteers two options: sink or swim. The former is a plane ticket home; the latter is the opportunity to grow and share in a culture very different from one's own. How well a person can adapt in various aspects of his or her daily and professional life determines the outcome. For the past 16 months I am proud to say that I have been swimming. I arrived in Cameroon, West Africa with a very basic ability to communicate in French, and have since forged meaningful relationships with several host–country nationals. In having to almost entirely change how I eat, dress, and complete household tasks, I have come to understand the values and practices of another culture. As a Caucasian female living in Cameroon, I am, for the first time in my life, a part of a very small minority. I experience harassment almost daily, and in certain instances my credibility has been reduced simply because of my sex. I feel that my first–hand experiences have given me a better understanding of the implications of discrimination, and will allow me to better contribute in such an environment. My overall abilities to adapt quickly, persevere, and make the most in a changing environment will help me overcome challenges faced in law school. • 14. Peace Corps Experience An experience of a lifetime, this can be defined differently depending on the individual. For me an experience of a lifetime is filled with breathtaking moments, challenges, laughter, tears, and joy. I believe that the Peace Corps is an experience of a lifetime. When I first learned about the Peace Corps and all that it requires I thought it was not for me. I attended an information session during my freshman year of college and walked away intimidated. The speaker shared her experiences of living in a foreign country and upstarting businesses and I could not imagine myself doing this. It was not until my junior year of college that I learned that, in fact, I did have the strength, independence, and self–motivation that is required for the volunteer position. Deciding to jump on a plane and spend a semester in Cusco, Peru my junior year of college exposed me to experiences that I had only dreamed of. By doing all of that, I made the most out of my study abroad experience and was able to grow as a person. While I learned a lot in Peru, I am not done learning. The Peace Corps is a volunteer organization that accommodates developing nations in need and improves limited skills such as education. Within the economy sector of society, the Peace Corps includes aspects of both work and labor. Based on class discussion, occupational impact importance, regarding teachers, their wages showcases the disparity within the field. Similarities among teachers and those in Peace Corps are prominent, although Peace Corp volunteers intend on making a difference abroad. I would like to be given the chance because I want to partake in educating those in need. I believe that the Peace Corps can help me do so. For example, the Peace Corps educates the communities in order to ensure that they will be able to support themselves after the volunteers leave. This is important to me because it is not enough to simply teach someone how to do things, but to reevaluate that they can do it themselves. This is what my nursing education has taught me with planning, implementing, reevaluation and finally discharge of patients. I trust that the Peace Corps is the best environment for me to develop and make use of my nursing skills. In addition, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It has continually reminded me of the culmination of my undergraduate studies, what life could possibly look like should I volunteer, and, more significantly, provided a constant reminder of the reason I am studying: to help others. The Peace Corp is a collective symbolization of my life experiences, schooling, and general attitudes; volunteering for this historic and breathtaking organization would be nothing short of life–changing. Now that the Peace Corp has done so much for me, I would like to return the favor and do something for it.
