DEFINITION
An increase in the amount of normal vaginal secretion is
termed Leucorrhoea.
Means pouring out white discharge per vagina.
This is a symptom and not a disease.

3. Incidence – It is a very common symptom, found in one of
every three patients.
Vaginal infection is the commonest (19%) causes of white
discharge.

4. Criterias for defining Leucorrhoea.
I. Excess mucoid Vaginal discharge then the normal.
II. Can wet the panty and Need to wear vulval pad.
III. Non – Purulent (Non infective)
IV. Non- Offensive
V. Non- Irritant
VI. No Pruritus

6. What is the Normal Amount ? –
1-2 ml / day which keeps the genital tract comfortably moist,
is transudent and watery.
Sources – From Vulval glands, Vaginal epithelial lining, the
Cervix , the Uterus, and Fallopian tubes.
The secretions are dependent upon the ovarian function and
sexual stimulation

7. The normal secretion (in character) show increase during
New born – Becomes due to maternal Oestrogene effects.
Puberty – Due to various hormonal effects.
Premenstrual and early ovulation – Variant ovarian
hormonal influence.
Early pregnancy and – Hormonal influence.
During sexual excitement – Hormonal and increased local

8. Loss of vaginal defense
• After 10th day of birth to Puberty – Lac of oestrogen.
• During menstruation
• Following Abortion and Excessive discharge increase the pH
• Child birth.
• After Menopause – Lac of oestrogen.

13. TREATMENT
Improve general health – Rest and good diet habits.
Counselling for – Regular bowel habits,
Personal and genital cleanliness,
Daily bath and changing of washed and dry cloths.
Regular physical exercise.
Psychological – Reassurance, Relief of anxiety and worry.
Tranquilizers may be helpful.
