The Internet boosted collaboration and innovation, making possible Open Source, Free Software, and the digital ecosystem we enjoy today, from connected cars to mobile apps. Open edX may be the latest and most exciting Free/Libre Open Source Software project in education today. Open edX is currently used from MOOCs to massive national e-learning deployments, or in addition to the local LMS. True to MIT's culture, the Open edX team has adopted an open and collaborative approach, releasing the code under a GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) for the core platform, and an Apache license for some libraries such as XBlock (for extensions). The community is invited to use, improve, and share code and practices, to accelerate innovation. The goal is to educate 1 billion students!

A significant problem facing Multi-Access courses with a limited number of face-to-face and online seats, is accommodating students who want or need to move between modalities without imposing an onerous administrative burden on instructors. One possible solution is the Seat eXchanger mobile web app under development in the TIE Lab at the University of Victoria. The Seat eXchanger app allows students to reserve and exchange of “seats,” depending on availability, and move seamlessly between modalities. At the beginning of the semester students indicate their primary mode of participation in the course, and then as needed or desired during the semester, they can use the web app to reserve a “seat” in a different modality for a session. For example if a student whose primary modality is face-to-face, wants to attend via remote video, they use the web app to reserve a virtual seat, which frees up their face-to-face “seat” in for someone else to use. The project roadmap includes: - Release of source code under an Open Source license to allow others to contribute code and documentation back to the project. - Integration with Moodle for authentication and seamless access for students. - Waitlist functionality for students to add themselves to a waitlist if no seats are available in their desired modality for a session. During this session, we will briefly demonstrate typical use cases for the software from the administrator and user perspectives, and then engage participants in a discussion about future functionality, features, and opportunities to contribute to the project.

Creating Authentic Learning with Moodle (CALM) is a workshop on EdMedia in Vancouver June 28, 2016. CALM focused on the design and implementation of Moodle courses for fully online, blended learning, the flipped classroom, and MOOCs. Participants will learn about socially engaging resources, activities, blocks available in Moodle 2.9. as teachers in the Teacher Practice Area (TPA) and managers in the Manager Practice Area (MPA) of a course. Attendees will engage in authentic learning as they create video tutorials using screencast-o-matic or Slidespeech to document and showcase their work.

With the advent of Moodle 2.X and Moodle HQs commitment to provide major dot point upgrades every six months, institutions need to have a very clear plan in place to ensure they stay current with the technology. Organisations cannot afford to get too far behind with a product that is evolving so quickly. The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) that self hosts three major instances of Moodle (USQStudyDesk, USQStaffDesk and USQOpenDesk) has committed itself to roll with a six-monthly upgrade cycle, aligned with its two major teaching periods. To do this we have developed a robust methodology and testing schema to ensure we meet our targets and commitments to the many key stakeholders involved. In July 2012 USQ upgraded from 1.9 to 2.2, in February 2013 it went to 2.3 and in June to 2.4, etc., etc. This is not a light undertaking and this presentation will share what USQ has had to do to ready itself for this type of commitment. Having now done this three times this presentation will look at some of the lessons learned. It will posit a series of considerations and look at the implications on ICT staff, systems support staff, training staff and more importantly, what this means for the consumers; academic staff and their students.
