 They want to be able to negotiate the healthcare system effectively
and be treated with dignity and respect
 They want to learn how to care for themselves away from the
clinical setting
 They want physicians to focus on their pain, physical discomfort
and functional disabilities.
According to a new study by the Stanford University’s School of
Humanities and Sciences, reassurance from the treating doctor could help
in speedy recovery of patients. The study showed that the symptoms
were significantly reduced when a healthcare provider offered a few
encouraging words about the patient recovery. The study was led by Alia
Crum, assistant professor of psychology at the Stanford University’s
School of Humanities and Sciences, and the findings were published

recently in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. According to Alia
Crum, we need not rely on medication and procedures alone always.
Graduate student Kari Leibowitz, lead author of the paper, said that the
findings on doctor reassurance are in line with what people had known
about the placebo effect. Research on placebo effect has shown the
importance and power of a physician’s words: when a physician gives
people an inert treatment such as sugar pills and tells them it will help
them feel better, that pill is often effective. To know the impact of
reassurance from physicians on patients, the researchers set up an
experiment with 76 study participants. They began their experiment by
including a harmless, allergic reaction in the study
participants. A healthcare provider administered a histamine skin prick, a
test traditionally used as a baseline to diagnose allergies. The participants
rated their level of itchiness on a scale of 0 to 100 at 3, 9, 12, 15, and 18
minutes. Six minutes later healthcare providers came back to check. For
half of the participants, the provider gave the assurance that the allergic
reaction will start to diminish and their irritation and rashes will go away,
and for the other half the provider gave no remarks. The researchers
found that the healthcare provider’s reassuring words reduced the
itchiness faster in patients who were given the reassurance compared to
those who were given no assurance.
According to Crum, going to the doctor is a psychological experience. She
advises healthcare providers to say something comforting to their patients
instead of saying “I can’t see anything wrong with you”.
In the present healthcare set up, doctors spend most of their time on
documentation tasks and less time with patients due to the EHR
requirements. It is important that they extract more time to spend with
their patients and give them the consolation and directions that are so
vital to build up a good relationship. A solution to this problem is hiring an

Graduate student Kari Leibowitz, lead author of the paper, said that the findings on doctor reassurance are in line with what people had known about the placebo effect. Research on placebo effect has shown the importance and power of a physician’s words: when a physician gives people an inert treatment such as sugar pills and tells them it will help them feel better, that pill is often effective. To know the impact of reassurance from physicians on patients, the researchers set up an experiment with 76 study participants. They began their experiment by including a harmless, allergic reaction in the study participants. A healthcare provider administered a histamine skin prick, a test traditionally used as a baseline to diagnose allergies. The participants rated their level of itchiness on a scale of 0 to 100 at 3, 9, 12, 15, and 18 minutes. Six minutes later healthcare providers came back to check. For half of the participants, the provider gave the assurance that the allergic reaction will start to diminish and their irritation and rashes will go away, and for the other half the provider gave no remarks. The researchers found that the healthcare provider’s reassuring words reduced the itchiness faster in patients who were given the reassurance compared to those who were given no assurance. According to Crum, going to the doctor is a psychological experience. She advises healthcare providers to say something comforting to their patients instead of saying “I can’t see anything wrong with you”. In the present healthcare set up, doctors spend most of their time on documentation tasks and less time with patients due to the EHR requirements. It is important that they extract more time to spend with their patients and give them the consolation and directions that are so vital to build up a good relationship.
