The interviews took place during June and July 2010, and were carried out by
telephone in the preferred language of the respondents. The questionnaire was
generated by IDC analysts and was designed to last approximately 25 minutes on
average to maintain respondent interest and enthusiasm.
To ensure that the appropriate respondent within each organization participated in the
survey, the respondents had to fill in their job title. Only directors, managers, and VPs
of IT or telecommunications/networks, CIOs, and CTOs were included, as they are
the main decision makers responsible for specifying and choosing WAN strategy,
services, technologies, and service providers.
The results are reported by country, sector, and company size. In each table or figure,
"n" represents the actual number of respondents.

Respondent Demographics
Tables 2–5 show respondent demographics segmented by country. To assess the
likelihood of respondents being affected by technology developments in other areas
in the world, respondents were asked to name the location of their company's
headquarters. As only 3% of respondents reported having their headquarters in other
areas outside EMEA, it can be assumed that respondents will be following EMEA
network service trends closely.

In the last few years, the European WAN Manager Survey results continuously
reported that improving network security was the key driver for network spending, but
this year's French results show a shift to new key drivers — voice data convergence
and virtualizing the servers. Improving security is still seen as a driver for ICT
spending, but as most companies have heavily invested in security in the past few
years, no big investments are expected in the short term.

Although there is a brighter economic outlook in France, most companies are still
cautious with spending on communication services and spending on network
equipment. Most companies reported that they will sweat their assets by extending
the lifetime of their existing equipment and to run their existing equipment at higher
utilization rates. Both responses to the economic situation are interesting for
equipment vendors and service providers, since companies cannot postpone new
equipment forever, and neither can they optimize their networks forever.

It is becoming more common for employees to work from home, resulting in less
commuting and lower workplace absenteeism. Most companies in EMEA use public
Internet with security when working from home or traveling. But French companies
form an exception as most companies reported that their employees use public
Internet with no security.

Green IT. The economic downturn has accelerated the demand for cost-saving
"green IT" solutions, such as reduced power consumption and energy efficiency.
Even though the economy is looking more positive and the focus is shifting away from
only cost saving, the increased use and importance of green IT is expected to
continue over the next five years.
Unified communications. The survey results are in line with our EMEA unified
communications forecast, with more companies moving toward UC. IDC expects this
move toward UC to continue over the next five years, but growth will continue to be
inhibited by the continuation of tightly regulated budgets as companies continue to be
cautious. Over the past three years an increasing number of companies moved to
managed unified communications services and, with the market for unified
communications forecast to grow, IDC expects this to continue over the next three
years. The complexity of unified communications will drive demand for managed
services and integration services for the next three years.
Cloud. The survey results are in line with IDC's worldwide cloud services forecast,
confirming that the market is growing, with 31% of companies planning to use cloud
computing within a year or on a longer timescale.
IP voice. IDC expects companies to accelerate their migration toward IP-based voice
services for greater flexibility, productivity, and cost-saving purposes. TDM PBX life
cycles cannot be prolonged any longer and companies are ready for a technology
refresh. The current trend toward enterprise server centralization and virtualization is
helping to boost IP-hosted voice rollout across Europe. Key service providers have
invested in reliable technology platforms and improved offerings with attractive
features, including fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) and better go-to-market
strategies. FMC is rapidly gaining ground in Europe, particularly among small and
medium-sized businesses. Cost reduction and control of international roaming costs
are main customer-interest drivers behind FMC today. IP voice will replace TDM
voice in due course but it will take a number of years. The uptake will be very different
from one country to another depending on incumbents' voice strategy and the quality
and availability of network access reaching small or remote locations.
Suppliers. As networks converge and demand for connectivity to any device
anywhere increases, demand for single supplier preference increases as well and this
is expected to continue as the complexity of using different providers increases.

The countries covered are Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K., Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, UAE, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The study will solely focus on the French region and compare the French results against EMEA as a whole.
  • 8. 2 #undefined ©2011 IDC M e t h o d o l o g y The interviews took place during June and July 2010, and were carried out by telephone in the preferred language of the respondents. The questionnaire was generated by IDC analysts and was designed to last approximately 25 minutes on average to maintain respondent interest and enthusiasm. To ensure that the appropriate respondent within each organization participated in the survey, the respondents had to fill in their job title. Only directors, managers, and VPs of IT or telecommunications/networks, CIOs, and CTOs were included, as they are the main decision makers responsible for specifying and choosing WAN strategy, services, technologies, and service providers. The results are reported by country, sector, and company size. In each table or figure, "n" represents the actual number of respondents. • 11. ©2011 IDC #undefined 5 I C T S p e n d i n g In the last few years, the European WAN Manager Survey results continuously reported that improving network security was the key driver for network spending, but this year's French results show a shift to new key drivers — voice data convergence and virtualizing the servers. Improving security is still seen as a driver for ICT spending, but as most companies have heavily invested in security in the past few years, no big investments are expected in the short term. Both responses to the economic situation are interesting for equipment vendors and service providers, since companies cannot postpone new equipment forever, and neither can they optimize their networks forever. • 31. ©2011 IDC #undefined 25 F U T U R E O U T L O O K Green IT. The economic downturn has accelerated the demand for cost-saving "green IT" solutions, such as reduced power consumption and energy efficiency. Even though the economy is looking more positive and the focus is shifting away from only cost saving, the increased use and importance of green IT is expected to continue over the next five years. Unified communications. The survey results are in line with our EMEA unified communications forecast, with more companies moving toward UC. IDC expects this move toward UC to continue over the next five years, but growth will continue to be inhibited by the continuation of tightly regulated budgets as companies continue to be cautious. Over the past three years an increasing number of companies moved to managed unified communications services and, with the market for unified communications forecast to grow, IDC expects this to continue over the next three years. The complexity of unified communications will drive demand for managed services and integration services for the next three years. Cloud. The survey results are in line with IDC's worldwide cloud services forecast, confirming that the market is growing, with 31% of companies planning to use cloud computing within a year or on a longer timescale. IP voice. IDC expects companies to accelerate their migration toward IP-based voice services for greater flexibility, productivity, and cost-saving purposes. TDM PBX life cycles cannot be prolonged any longer and companies are ready for a technology refresh. The current trend toward enterprise server centralization and virtualization is helping to boost IP-hosted voice rollout across Europe. Key service providers have invested in reliable technology platforms and improved offerings with attractive features, including fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) and better go-to-market strategies. FMC is rapidly gaining ground in Europe, particularly among small and medium-sized businesses. Cost reduction and control of international roaming costs are main customer-interest drivers behind FMC today. IP voice will replace TDM voice in due course but it will take a number of years. The uptake will be very different from one country to another depending on incumbents' voice strategy and the quality and availability of network access reaching small or remote locations. Suppliers. As networks converge and demand for connectivity to any device anywhere increases, demand for single supplier preference increases as well and this is expected to continue as the complexity of using different providers increases.
