MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
Rachel Lee
2. WHAT IS DISTRIBUTION?
The person or company which is responsible for the
marketing of the film and represents it n a Film
Distributor.
The film distributor will make the decisions regarding
the date of which the film should be released on.
Other things a film distributor would do would be to
arrange and sort out all advertising of the film and
how they chose for it to be publicized.
3. EXAMPLE DISTRIBUTOR- PARAMOUNT
Paramount is a well known TV and film distributor that
is ranked as one of the largest film studios. It was
founded in 1912 (has been running just over 100
years). Paramount is based in the USA with its
head quarters being in the famous film capital –
Hollywood. Some well known films which
paramount have distributed consist of
Transformers, Mission Impossible and Paranormal
Activity (the film we chose to base our own film on).
Paramount distribute movies on videos and DVD’s.
4. OUR FILM:
In my opinion I think that Paramount would be very
interested in our films as it is a supernatural thriller
which they have distributed before (Paranormal Activity).
Although I think a company such as paramount would
be interested in the film, as our budget is so low trying to
get a big name company such a paramount to distribute
our film would be a massive challenge that would take a
long process.
However, if paramount was to distribute our film it would
get a lot more views and screenings around the world as
paramount is a big name world wide company. Our film
would appeal to a very wide audience of ages between
16-24 all across the world and not just in the UK as we
know this genre is very modern and very popular today.
5. MARKETING STRATEGIES
As our film has a very low budget we would need to be very careful when
marketing and advertising our film.
Good ways we could use to advertise our film with such a low budget would
be to use social networking media sites such as twitter, Facebook and
YouTube. This would be a very affective method as our target audience
of 16-24 year olds are the people most active on these sites so they are
more likely to see information about our film on site such as the ones
listed above.
Other good ways we could use to market and advertise our film on a low
budget could be to use posters and bill boards in popular area such as
shopping centers as this would catch the general publics eye. We could
create a websites based purely for our film. A popular for of adverting
would be to create a trailer and have it aired on TV on popular channels,
however this would be more expensive than alternative options so it
would depends on the finance available whether or not that was a
possible method of advertising.
Advertising is very important when releasing a new film as you want your
audience as drawn in as possible before even watching the film, and an
effective advertising and marketing campaign is the best way to do this.
6. SELF DISTRIBUTING
Alternatively we would chose to distribute our film ourselves via using the
internet, social networking sites, YouTube and posters/flyers. However
there are pro’s and con’s to self distributing.
Pro’s:
When self distributing you are able to have full control over your film and
how it is marketed. You would also have full control over cash flow (your
budget) so you would know what your money is being spent on. Also all
profits made from the film you would get to keep instead is giving out a
percentage to your distributor.
Con’s:
Depending on how you chose to distribute your film it can be very
expensive. Even though you have full control over your budget and how
it is spent, it will cost a large amount to distribute your film at a good level
where it will sell. Self distributing can be a very time consuming process
if you are doing it individually where as large companies are able to
distribute films faster with higher efficiency. The main drawback of self
distributing is that less people are likely to see your film as it is not being
advertised by a big name brand.
