Rochelle Blackman Slivka was born in 1922 in Vilna, Poland (now Vilna, Lithuania). In 1941, Germany occupied Vilna and began deporting Jews to Ponary, where they were shot. Slivka's family was confined to the Vilna Ghetto, where her mother died. In 1943, she was sent to the Kaiser Wald camp in Latvia and then to the Stutthof camp. She and her sister were liberated in 1945.
