2. EDUCATIONAL SETTING 7th Grade Life Science Students 18 gifted students in one class 13 White, 4 African-American, 1 Asian 21 students in regular education class 10 White, 8 African-American, 3 Hispanic
4. INFUSING TECHNOLOGY Students used Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus graphing calculators to complete a lab exercise which measured the amount of oxygen in their lungs after normal breathing and after a period of hyperventilation.
8. CURRICULUM SUPPORT The TI-84 calculators provide curriculum support for: data collection & interpretation the study of human body systems the study of gas exchange between humans and their environments.
10. DIFFERENCES IN LEARNING Using technology in the classroom caused students to become more engaged and self-motivated. The students were eager to learn to use the TI-84 calculators, so they paid closer attention to classroom instruction leading up to the lab exercise. When the lab was over, the students enthusiastically shared their results and asked relevant questions.
11. Support issue #1:locating technology This is the storage room where the calculators (and other pieces of equipment) were stored. They were at the school for 2 years before they were used because no one knew where they were.
12. Support issue #2:lack of training This is the where the calculators sat for about a year because no one knew how they could be used in a science classroom. A free professional development course at the University of West Georgia got the teachers on their way.
13. THE RESULTS OF TECH INFUSION Higher student motivation Increased student achievement Labs with greater real-life correlation No more sleeping through class!
