It is not difficult to lose weight after baby. What is important is how you go about it. Here are five
guidelines that can make your task easier:

1. Minimum time to lose weight after baby: On an average, women gain 25 to 35 pounds during
the course of pregnancy. Of this, almost 12 to 14 pounds is lost during childbirth. You need six to
eight months to lose the remaining 12 to 20 pounds. However, your clock to lose weight after baby
will start four to six weeks after childbirth.

2. Importance of breastfeeding in weight loss: Yes. It is the natural way to lose weight. You
produce around 850 ml of breast milk every day. To produce this, your body needs to burn at least
200 to 500 calories.

3. Time to start exercises: You need to give yourself four weeks in case of normal childbirth and
six weeks in the case of C-section. Also, in the case of C-section moms, the exercises to lose
weight should be started only after consulting the doctor.

4. Pacing yourself: You should never be in a tearing hurry to lose weight after baby or else you will
cause serious damage to your body. Ideally, you should start with a low impact or light exercise
like walking. Even this should be limited to say ten minutes to start with. Gradually, the duration of
the exercise should be increased. You can then yoga, an exercise that can be done at home. The
other exercises that you can do at home are pilates, Kreger crunches and pelvic lifts. While doing
these exercises you must make sure that you don't feel dizzy or tired.

5. Shift to healthy food: Your diet has a big role to play both in your recovery and in losing fat after
baby. It is also a natural way, and requires no extra effort. Your doctor or dietitian can easily work
out a healthy and nutritious diet for you. Ideally, it should include low fat food, generous sprinkling
of vitamins, and fibers, and lots of fluids.
