May is National Lupus Awareness Month and the W.O.W Organization has decided that Lupus
is a bully and we will not all ourselves, our loved ones or anyone be pushed around and knocked
down by lupus! So we will put the Pwower behind doing our part to fight. Are you wearing
purple? Purple is the color chosen to represent that you support finding a cure for lupus.

Let’s take a look at Lupus. Below are a few facts obtained from the Lupus.org website that will
give us all a better understanding of a disease that is on the rise and a cure must be found.

What is Lupus?

Lupus is an unpredictable and complex autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and can
damage any organ in the body with life-threatening consequences.

Types of Lupus:

Systemic lupus is the most common type of lupus.
Discoid lupus (the most common form of skin lupus)
Drug-induced lupus is a lupus-like disease caused by taking specific prescription drugs.

Who?

Ninety percent of the people who develop lupus are female.

Lupus develops most often between ages 15 and 44.

African Americans, Hispanics/Latinas, Asians and Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans are
diagnosed with lupus two or three times more frequently than Caucasians

Diagnosis:

There is no single laboratory test that can determine whether a person has lupus. A review of the
person’s entire medical history and that of their family is necessary to determine if a person has
lupus

Treatment:

Successful treatment of lupus often requires a combination of medications. A new treatment for
lupus was approved recently

A nutritious, well-balanced, and varied diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole
grains, and moderate amounts of fish and lean meats helps with keeping lupus systems to a
minimum

A person with lupus should quit smoking, as tobacco products can cause flares of lupus
symptoms.

For daily lupus facts and more information about the disease please visit www.lupus.org
What can WE do?

The W.O.W Organization and Community are prepared to fight the Lupus bully but not with our
fists! We plan to fight with our hearts and our minds. We will Encourage the people that are
battling this dreadful disease! We will encourage them to be Victorious over their diagnosis. We
will Empower others to stand with the persons affected by lupus! We are going to continue to
arm ourselves with education to increase our awareness. We are Embracing one another and
coming together to show lupus that we are PWOWERFUL and it will no longer win this war that
it has have wages against the persons who are fighting daily. In the month of May a portion of
the proceeds from the sale of W.O.W apparel with be donated to the Lupus organization in
support of finding a cure and assisting lupus patients with costs associated with medical care.
