86. Conclusions FTR 2011 (1 of 4)
European football suffering financial recession, with all top European leagues
experimenting losses for 2 years in a row
In this context, European transfers market value has decreased 29% to 1,322mio€.
English Premier League continues to lead investment despite 3rd consecutive decrease
After a severe decrease in investment (45%) –mainly provoked by Real Madrid and FC
Barcelona reductions, la Liga is now the third in Europe in terms of transfer spending
Manchester City is the highest investment club with 145mio€, as it invests in a 2nd
consecutive new football project. Even with a 71% player transfers investment decrease,
Real Madrid is still #2 in Europe
La Liga BBVA is the highest players selling top European league (287mio€), which leads to
a negative total net investment in new players (24mio€), after experimienting more value
in sales than in purchases. Valencia is the highest selling European club with 84mio€,
followed by FC Barcelona with 69mio€, the highest figure in its history (despite having to
officially account for losses)
86
87. Conclusions FTR 2011 (2 of 4)
FC Barcelona’s David Villa acquisition becomes the highest this summer in Europe.
At the same time, Manchester City has put 5 players in the top 10
Real Madrid & FC Barcelona will both lead again European Club revenues when
2009/10 ranking is published. Real’s accounts show more strength than Barça´s,
with profits before tax of 31mio€. Player costs have boosted FC Barcelona losses to
77mio€, which has made squad changes to save 25mio€ in salaries at season
2010/11
Financial constraints have led to a variety of management practices at La Liga
football clubs such as:
1. Sale of players which were important to the team
2. Across the board usage of loans and cost zero transfers (representing more
than 50% in Spain)
3. Wage costs reduction by having more exits than new player arrivals
4. Reduced manager rotation, using more nationals with less expertise and
agreeing shorter duration contracts to minimize impact of wrong decisions
87
88. Conclusions FTR 2011 (3 of 4)
Results of last season new player signings show that financial investment does not secure
sporting results success (Real Madrid, Manchester City and Juventus cases). Furthermore, 7
out of 10 highest cost signings of last year did not show the expected performance on the pitch
Other highlighted data from La Liga:
– Excluding Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, total new players investment has grown 18% to
111mio€, lead by spending by Valencia, Atlético and Málaga. Player sales (Valencia and
Atlético) and ownership change (Málaga) have contributed to such spending
– Getafe has sold players for a total value of 63mio€ over the last 5 years (21 in 2010/11)
– Levante has assembled the team exclusively thru loans and no cost transfers (11 players)
– La Liga has the lowest % of non national players (37,9%). English Premier League has the
highest (63,2%)
– Valencia, Espanyol and Mallorca are the teams with highest number of player exits (12)
– Athletic Bilbao has the youngest squad (25,1 years old in average) and Hércules the oldest
(28,1)
– Villarreal has registered 9 players in the 1st team coming from Villarreal B
– Atlético de Madrid is the team with more U21 players (7)
– Zaragoza is the team with lowest average player stability (1 year)
88
89. Conclusions FTR 2011 (4 of 4)
Other highlighted data from FC Barcelona:
– Chygrynky was the least used player out of top most expensive of 2009/10
– European team accumulating more minutes with players at World Cup
– La Liga team with less players registered as 1st team (19)
– The team with lowest new player continuity ratio (only 1 out of the players continues)
– 4th highest average age at la Liga (27,1). Does not include players registered as FC
Barcelona B
– La Liga team with highest average player stability (3,6 years)
Other highlighted data from Real Madrid:
– 87% player sales reduction to 11mio€, after only trading Van der Vaart
– Xabi Alonso was the most used player out of most expensive of 2009/10
– European team with more players participating in World Cup (12, along with Bayern
Munich)
– La Liga team with lowest number of player exits (5)
– La Liga team with highest new player continuity ratio (7 out of 7 players continue in
the team)
– Squad with 3rd lowest average age (25,5)
