An 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson accidentally invented the Popsicle in 1905 when he left a mixture of soda water and powdered soda on his porch overnight and awoke to find it frozen solid. He called it the "Epsicle" and it became popular with his friends and family. In 1923, Epperson changed the name to "Popsicle" and patented it. He later sold the rights to the Popsicle brand name to the Joe Lowe Company in New York. The Popsicle has since become an American classic with over 30 variations on the original frozen treat.
