Rought Draft #1 : Food & Water
Food and water is the most important things in human life. We e
at food and drink
water to survive in the world. A lot of people know that food an
d water is really important
to them but they don’t really care about throwing away food and
water. Because most
people think that the society has enough food and water, they al
ways throw away their
leftover food and water. Although, people thinks that we have a
n unlimited sources for
food and water, world clearly shows that not just America, but o
ther countries are
struggling with drought situations and they are slowly running o
ut of food. This is not the
only problem. A lot of people in this society is having trouble w
ith obese because of food
and water. Although, people can eat whatever they want to eat, t
hey should have a limit
because United States’ obesity problem is getting worse than be
fore and a lot of people
dies every year because of obesity.
“If the average calories consumed at each visit were reduced by
approximately
60 calories, the population impact on obesity could be significa
nt,” (American Journal of
Preventive Medicine). Obesity started when America started to
build a lot of fast food
restaurants. For example, McDonalds, BurgerKing, KFC, ETC.
These fast food chain
store changed a lot of people’s life in a bad way. People started
to gain weight and sick
because of these fast food restaurants. Because fast food store’s
foods have a lot of
calories and unhealthy ingredient, people starts to gain overwei
ght. However, some
people thinks that obesity isn’t bad as diseases or cancers. Whic
h is true but it is not
easy to get back to normal when you become obese because peo
ple get addicted by
fast foods and they won’t be able to stop eating. Obesity causes
lack of balance energy
for your body system. For example, when normal person eats fo
od, the calories
balances out of your weight and calories you need. However, if
you have obese,
calories doesn’t balance and the fat gets created inside the body.
This causes coronary
heart disease and high blood pressure. Honestly, people don’t re
ally have to worry
about food and water if they exercise and move around regularly
. Obesity is generally
caused by eating fast foods or any kinds of food without exercis
ing or moving. Even
though food and water is really important to us, people need to
know that food and
water can be dangerous to us if we don’t exercise or move aroun
d after we eat. Our
environment doesn’t support healthy lifestyle habits so it encour
ages obesity. The
solution of the obesity is to work out/diet, and make rules in sch
ool/work/private places
that they have to move around at least 30 minutes. The cause of
obesity can be being
lazy but the main point is about how much food and what kind o
f food you eat.
In this society, every ingredients are limited. Even though there
are a lot of
ingredients out there but one day, this world can run out of food
and water. It is already
happening in Africa. I went to the Africa when I was 7th grade.
The city I went was
called Gambia. Gambia is really wonderful place but in same ti
me it was really poor. I
went to Gambia to give out food, water, and supplies from Amer
ica. Gambians told me
that they are hungry everyday but they are happy to eat one or t
wo meal a day. In
America, we can eat so much food that we don’t have to worry a
bout limited food and
water. In Gambia, they don’t even have enough water to drink s
o they drink water from
dirty sink or any places that water comes out. When I was watch
ing them drinking that
water, I realized how spoiled United States is. It is true that Uni
ted States is really rich
country and provides a lot of food and water for people. Howev
er, I always think that if
we keep buy food and water and throw away the leftovers, one d
ay there will be an
emergency about food and water in America. Besides, countries
that have enough food
and water for themselves should donate some food to Africa or
countries that really
needs food and water so they can survive. When I was in Gambi
a, I saw this kid almost
died because of hunger and thirst. It was really painful to watch
him. Even though we
brought food and water for them, it was kind of too late for peo
ple who were about to die
for starve. It was too late because their body cannot take any fo
od anymore. Watching
them dying slowly hurted my heart. Food and water should be e
nough in United States
right now but in other poor country, it isn’t.
When people cook, they use animals and vegetables. Animals an
d vegetables
are limited sources but they are reproductive so there’s so many
of them in some
countries. However, we are running out of water right now. Rec
ently, people found out
that California is in extremely drought situation. People started
to freak out and they
started to save water. However, when the time went by, people s
tarted not caring about
water and now a days, people uses water as much as before the
drought situations
happened. People always need to remind that this world is runni
ng out of water. Even
when the rain drops, the drought situation.
Even in the midst of the drought news around us, there are many
ways in which we can
enhance food security. Africa has the highest numbers of countr
ies facing extreme food
insecurity in the world today. Sudan is a good example. Food se
curity is when a county
is able to feed her citizens at any given time. The United States
is a good example of a
country with good food security strategies in the world. Every c
ountry has a staple food
product. Even when other food stuffs are rare, the locals can stil
l find the product and
consume it. In Uganda, for example, matoke, is their staple food
. Matoke is unripe
bananas that grows naturally in river banks and other fertile are
as in Uganda. In some
parts of Uganda therefore, the locals have a sense of food securi
ty because of these
naturally growing food products. Food security, however, beco
mes a challenge when
drought strikes a country. A good government strategy is to crea
te reserves which will
act as buffers or a cushion to lay back on when food production
in a country has gone
low. Good food reserves are those which can take a country 5 –
10 years.
Keeping animals which can survive in harsh climatic conditions
is one way to
curb food security. Goats are a good example. There are also cr
ops which can survive
the harsh climatic conditions. Scientists have over the years, co
me up with genetically
modified crops which can survive harsh climatic conditions and
give food products
which have nutritional value.
Nutrition is vital especially for young children. Young children
need food rich in
nutrients to enhance their body growth. Children with nutrition
deficiencies have stunted
growth and leads to high infant and child mortality. This is most
ly found hunger stricken
areas, which are areas with extreme food insecurity.
Entomophagy, which is consuming bugs, could be a cost effecti
ve solution for
developing countries that are food insecure. Insects can contain
up to 80% protein. The
body’s vital building blocks. And are also high in energy rich fa
t, fiber and micro
nutrients like vitamins and minerals. Did you know that most ed
ible insects contain the
same amount or even more mineral iron than beef? Making them
a huge untapped
resource when you consider that iron deficiency is currently the
most common
nutritional problem in the world.
Farming insects for food also has less environmental impacts th
an livestock
farms do, because insects emit far less greenhouse gas and use u
p less space, water
and food. Socioeconomically, bug production could uplift peopl
e in developing
countries. Since insect farms can be small scale, highly producti
ve and yet relatively
inexpensive to keep. Insects can also be turned into more sustai
nable food for livestock
and can be reared on organic waste, like vegetable peelings that
may otherwise just
end up rotting in landfills.
Food and water is vital for the world to revolve. Many people w
ork to feed
themselves and their families. Many businesses: Starbucks, KFC
, McDonalds, depend
on food products for their businesses to thrive. They source thei
r raw products from
other countries, countries which mainly depend on agricultural
produce for the growth of
its economy. Food, therefore, becomes a backbone for economic
development.

  • 1. Jaewon Choi Professor Stimpson RHET 110 10 October 2014 Rought Draft #1 : Food & Water Food and water is the most important things in human life. We e at food and drink water to survive in the world. A lot of people know that food an d water is really important to them but they don’t really care about throwing away food and water. Because most people think that the society has enough food and water, they al ways throw away their leftover food and water. Although, people thinks that we have a n unlimited sources for food and water, world clearly shows that not just America, but o ther countries are struggling with drought situations and they are slowly running o ut of food. This is not the only problem. A lot of people in this society is having trouble w
  • 2. ith obese because of food and water. Although, people can eat whatever they want to eat, t hey should have a limit because United States’ obesity problem is getting worse than be fore and a lot of people dies every year because of obesity. “If the average calories consumed at each visit were reduced by approximately 60 calories, the population impact on obesity could be significa nt,” (American Journal of Preventive Medicine). Obesity started when America started to build a lot of fast food restaurants. For example, McDonalds, BurgerKing, KFC, ETC. These fast food chain store changed a lot of people’s life in a bad way. People started to gain weight and sick because of these fast food restaurants. Because fast food store’s foods have a lot of calories and unhealthy ingredient, people starts to gain overwei ght. However, some people thinks that obesity isn’t bad as diseases or cancers. Whic h is true but it is not
  • 3. easy to get back to normal when you become obese because peo ple get addicted by fast foods and they won’t be able to stop eating. Obesity causes lack of balance energy for your body system. For example, when normal person eats fo od, the calories balances out of your weight and calories you need. However, if you have obese, calories doesn’t balance and the fat gets created inside the body. This causes coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. Honestly, people don’t re ally have to worry about food and water if they exercise and move around regularly . Obesity is generally caused by eating fast foods or any kinds of food without exercis ing or moving. Even though food and water is really important to us, people need to know that food and water can be dangerous to us if we don’t exercise or move aroun d after we eat. Our environment doesn’t support healthy lifestyle habits so it encour ages obesity. The solution of the obesity is to work out/diet, and make rules in sch ool/work/private places
  • 4. that they have to move around at least 30 minutes. The cause of obesity can be being lazy but the main point is about how much food and what kind o f food you eat. In this society, every ingredients are limited. Even though there are a lot of ingredients out there but one day, this world can run out of food and water. It is already happening in Africa. I went to the Africa when I was 7th grade. The city I went was called Gambia. Gambia is really wonderful place but in same ti me it was really poor. I went to Gambia to give out food, water, and supplies from Amer ica. Gambians told me that they are hungry everyday but they are happy to eat one or t wo meal a day. In America, we can eat so much food that we don’t have to worry a bout limited food and water. In Gambia, they don’t even have enough water to drink s o they drink water from dirty sink or any places that water comes out. When I was watch ing them drinking that water, I realized how spoiled United States is. It is true that Uni
  • 5. ted States is really rich country and provides a lot of food and water for people. Howev er, I always think that if we keep buy food and water and throw away the leftovers, one d ay there will be an emergency about food and water in America. Besides, countries that have enough food and water for themselves should donate some food to Africa or countries that really needs food and water so they can survive. When I was in Gambi a, I saw this kid almost died because of hunger and thirst. It was really painful to watch him. Even though we brought food and water for them, it was kind of too late for peo ple who were about to die for starve. It was too late because their body cannot take any fo od anymore. Watching them dying slowly hurted my heart. Food and water should be e nough in United States right now but in other poor country, it isn’t. When people cook, they use animals and vegetables. Animals an d vegetables are limited sources but they are reproductive so there’s so many of them in some
  • 6. countries. However, we are running out of water right now. Rec ently, people found out that California is in extremely drought situation. People started to freak out and they started to save water. However, when the time went by, people s tarted not caring about water and now a days, people uses water as much as before the drought situations happened. People always need to remind that this world is runni ng out of water. Even when the rain drops, the drought situation. Even in the midst of the drought news around us, there are many ways in which we can enhance food security. Africa has the highest numbers of countr ies facing extreme food insecurity in the world today. Sudan is a good example. Food se curity is when a county is able to feed her citizens at any given time. The United States is a good example of a country with good food security strategies in the world. Every c ountry has a staple food product. Even when other food stuffs are rare, the locals can stil
  • 7. l find the product and consume it. In Uganda, for example, matoke, is their staple food . Matoke is unripe bananas that grows naturally in river banks and other fertile are as in Uganda. In some parts of Uganda therefore, the locals have a sense of food securi ty because of these naturally growing food products. Food security, however, beco mes a challenge when drought strikes a country. A good government strategy is to crea te reserves which will act as buffers or a cushion to lay back on when food production in a country has gone low. Good food reserves are those which can take a country 5 – 10 years. Keeping animals which can survive in harsh climatic conditions is one way to curb food security. Goats are a good example. There are also cr ops which can survive the harsh climatic conditions. Scientists have over the years, co me up with genetically modified crops which can survive harsh climatic conditions and give food products which have nutritional value.
  • 8. Nutrition is vital especially for young children. Young children need food rich in nutrients to enhance their body growth. Children with nutrition deficiencies have stunted growth and leads to high infant and child mortality. This is most ly found hunger stricken areas, which are areas with extreme food insecurity. Entomophagy, which is consuming bugs, could be a cost effecti ve solution for developing countries that are food insecure. Insects can contain up to 80% protein. The body’s vital building blocks. And are also high in energy rich fa t, fiber and micro nutrients like vitamins and minerals. Did you know that most ed ible insects contain the same amount or even more mineral iron than beef? Making them a huge untapped resource when you consider that iron deficiency is currently the most common nutritional problem in the world. Farming insects for food also has less environmental impacts th an livestock
  • 9. farms do, because insects emit far less greenhouse gas and use u p less space, water and food. Socioeconomically, bug production could uplift peopl e in developing countries. Since insect farms can be small scale, highly producti ve and yet relatively inexpensive to keep. Insects can also be turned into more sustai nable food for livestock and can be reared on organic waste, like vegetable peelings that may otherwise just end up rotting in landfills. Food and water is vital for the world to revolve. Many people w ork to feed themselves and their families. Many businesses: Starbucks, KFC , McDonalds, depend on food products for their businesses to thrive. They source thei r raw products from other countries, countries which mainly depend on agricultural produce for the growth of its economy. Food, therefore, becomes a backbone for economic development.
