Dynamics of Destructive Polarisation in Mainstream and Social Media: The Case...
Pakistan
1. Pakistan’s Political Turmoil
Pakistan’s current state of political turmoil is largely due to the series of events which took
place, right from Mr. Nawaz Sherif being denied entry inside the nation, Benazir’s
homecoming, Nawaz Sherif‘s successful reentry after a series of negotiations, till the
greatest incident of all, involving the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister
M/S.Benazir Bhutto and to add salt to the wound, the series of violent incidents happening
due to the tragic death of it’s charismatic women leader, thus mounting pressures for the
Musharraf’s Government from inside and outside the nation, which has had a major impact
in shaking the economic stability of the nation .
M/S.Benazir Bhutto has become a victim of the so called “War Against Terrorism” led by
America with other nations, to eliminate Terrorists from the Islamic Fundamentalist group’s
who destroy peace and economic stability of nations in the name of “Jihad” terming it as a
“HOLY WAR”.
There has been a political instability in Pakistan ever since the military president joining
hands with U.S to eradicate the extremists group such as Al-Qaeda ,who’s chief region of
operation being the Pakistan – Afghanistan bordering regions.
Pakistan’s Military forces along with US Troops had earlier targeted and attacked
Madrasa’s across the border to crack down these anti social elements, which had been a
place of shelter to these communal forces, also a center point from where they could branch
and carry out all their terror activities. This made Musharraf loose his goodwill and earn the
displeasure of various Islamic Groups who were strictly agains the US and those who
support US in its operations.
This has come as a major setback for restoring democracy in the nation. Earlier there was
wide spread chaos following the Emergency Declaration by the military ruler in context of
maintaining Law And Order in the country. Just as the Emergency was lifted, due to
mounting pressures from US and major nations on the Musharraf led government insisting
to restore democracy in the nation, adding to the stepping down of Gen.Pervez Musharraf,
as the military chief in order to sustain his position as the president of the nation.
The assassination of M/S Bhutto has made things worse for the Musharraf government.
Mean while,Pakistant’s president Pervez Musharraf strongly condemned this brutal act by
the Islamic Fundamentalist’s and said that he would double his efforts to eliminate these
extremists who try to disturb the peace of nations.
There has been series of protests and violent explosions which has erupted all across
Pakistan, after M/S.Bhutto’s assasination. Many supporters took to the streets in anger,
torching vehicles and damaging government property, blaming the government for not
offering effective protection to the women leader.
2. Earlier M/S.Bhutto had earlier accused the ruling party of backing militants for killing her.
She had stated in an email “if harmed Musharraf should be accounted responsible for her
death.,which was later revealed by a cnn journalist who had received it from M/S.Bhutto’s
friend and US Spokesperson Mark Siegel.
M/S.Bhutto had sent the mail on October, after an attempt was made to her life by
extremists in which she luckily escaped , day after her return to Pakistan, being in exile for
several years.
On the other hand, Mr.Pervez Musharraf blamed M/S.Bhutto as the one responsible for her
own assassination stating ,”I had warned her about threat” but “she had Ignored the
warning”. Also the US Intelligence sources had also warned her about the threat, she had
been reluctant about it. Following this it seems that everyone knew apparently about the
threat M/S.Bhutto had on her life and were expecting it to happen some day or the other.
Benazir in order to mobilize here Political Career, after being in exile for years, had risked
her life at stake for her political betterment.
On the other hand her longtime political arch rival Mr.Nawaz Sherrif whose common
enemy being the military led government led by Mr.Pervez Musharraf, immediately rushed
to the hospital in which MS.Bhutto’s body was kept following the incidents. There he
vowed that he would take revenge against the ruling government, which had failed to
protect the first women prime minister of the nation. Mr.Sharif said that the assassinated
leader was like a sister to him and he would join several of her party members in sharing
their grief and to fight those forces behind this brutal killing.
Now after all these events following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, it has weakened
the hands of those against the Military Ruler and also delayed the restoration of democracy
in the nation. The one who could capitalize due to the current political games unfolding
after Benazir’s assassination, is Mr.Nawaz Sharif who till now has not missed a single
opportunity to capitalize on this current situation , in order to win the political war game in
his quest to regain the position as Leader of the nation once again, after being ousted by the
Military ruler following a coup against his government several years ago.
This current situation in Pakistan would come as a stumbling block for the government’s
measures taken in order to nip these extremists forces.
Unless and until a new democratic government is formed after a Free And Fair
Elections, has made everyone raise their eyebrow’s and too keep their fingers crossed, till
the time reveals itself in the near future.
