2. Burma
A brutal military dictatorship, charged by the United
Nations with “crimes against humanity” for its
systematic abuses of human rights, and condemned
internationally for refusing to transfer power to the
legally elected Government of the country.
3. Aung San Suu Kyi
On June 19th 2009, Burma's democracy leader, Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Laureate celebrated her 64nd
birthday in the notorious Insein Prison.
She was recently released from prison and sentenced to
another 18 months home imprisonment. This has been the
case for 14 out of the last 19 years.
4. The military junta is one of the most
brutal and corrupt regimes in the
world, responsible for:
• The widespread use of forced
labour
• Over 1 million people forced from
their homes
• At least 1100 political prisoners,
many of whom are routinely
tortured
• Rape as a weapon of war against
ethnic women and children
• One in ten babies die before their
fifth birthday (1/5 in Eastern
Burma)
5. Latest Developments in Burma
• On 6 June 2009 the Burmese military attacked the
village of Ler Per Her inside Burma, displacing 3295
people who had sought refuge there. These people
have since fled across the border to Thailand
seeking asylum.
• The military Junta continue to deny requests/
demand from UN and other countries to do
something about their humanitarian situation.
7. What have we done over the past 12
months
• Elpis School
– Connected to mains water
– Galvanized roof over library which housed books
and electronic equipment
– Sports shirts for 287 students & uniform shirts for
13 staff
– The school now has 467 students (had 287 in January) and
currently accommodates 14 Lahu and Hmong Hilltribe girls
as orphans who were destined for the sex trade.
