Will contribute:
People skills:
As Course Leader, I manage a team of specialist lecturers and visiting artists.
Proven ability to engage with a range of users:
Part of my remit is the marketing of my course through outreach work in local
schools and colleges. In addition I work with local arts organisations and co-ordinate
student exhibitions in professional gallery spaces.
Technical prowess as demonstrated in personal practice and teaching:
Up-to-date subject-specific knowledge including understanding of the breadth of
contemporary practice across a range of Fine Art and design disciplines.
In addition to the outstanding subject knowledge I employ everyday in my teaching
role, I also maintain my own painting practice and work as a professional cartoonist
( solo drawing show July 2015).
Understanding of the importance of Equality and Diversity:
Recognising that different experiences and backgrounds enrich creative learning and
collaborative practice. E&D is embedded into my teaching practice, as shown
through writing project briefs that reflect the diversity of practitioners.
Excellent organisational skills:
Essential to current Course Manager role, including co-ordination of student
exhibitions.
Administrative and monitoring systems are a major part of the current educational
environment and in this regard I am highly organised and proficient. A recent
external examiner report described my course documents as “exemplary”.
An approachable, informed, personable disposition:
I pride myself on my ability to communicate easily with students, peers and superiors
at all levels.
4. Student Testimonials:
“I am leaving the college a much more confident and well rounded student. The Art
Foundation allowed me to experiment in a structured and extremely supportive
environment. By exploring many different subject areas, I was able to specialise in
what I wanted to do moving forward at university. I have already recommended the
course to friends as I have felt completely welcome and nurtured throughout the
experience.”
“Phil is a very open artist and teacher who is always willing to listen to your ideas
and put in the extra work to help you to achieve your aims. He consistently keeps
discussion and creativity alive in the studio by encouraging students to engage with
each other and learn from each other’s work. It is clear that he is incredibly devoted
to his students and has offered his knowledge and support every step of the way.”
“I will take the confidence to try new things and push myself, to be resourceful,
imaginative and open minded! I will take the knowledge that talking within groups
and working together is rewarding and always helpful. I will take my revelation in
scale and sculpture and the power of the found object! I have also learnt how much
you can change and evolve in one year.”
“Phil is fab, although all of your help and suggestions were always great, I never felt
that you enforced your own opinion too much on other students’ work, which I think
was really important in gaining our trust in you. You are very dedicated to ensuring
everyone is content each day, and have been a fabulous tutor”
