Last week two of Paul Roos
Gymnasium’s U/14 cricketers
produced a master class of tenacity
and scored a record second-wicket
partnership for their team.
Facing the Somerset College
bowlers who had removed one of
the opening batsmen cheaply, PRG’s
Francois Joubert strode to the wicket
to join Ruan Terblanche.
The two attacking batsmen
immediately started to score quickly
and were soon dominating the bowl-
ers. Despite a valiant effort from the
Somerset bowlers, they simply had no
answer to the stroke play of Joubert
and Terblanche, who were firing at
142 and 180 strike rates respectively.
Both batsmen got to triple figures
– but that was only the start of the
run fest as they continued to strike
the ball to all corners of the field.
Joubert was particularly aggressive as
he thumped 11 sixes and 32 fours in
his mammoth 263-not-out innings
in a breathtaking display of attacking
cricket.
Ruan Terblanche, who had opened
the innings, finished with 212 runs,
not out, which constituted a record
486-run partnership for the second
wicket in this 50-over match.
Look on page 4 at record partner-
ships in all forms of the game, inclu-
ding minor cricket, to see just how
remarkable this partnership was.

I think my neighbour is stalking me as she has been Googling my name on her computer. I saw it through my telescope last
night.
Laasweek was een van die warm-
stes op rekord, op min plekke
meer so as in ons geliefde Stellen-
bosch. Dié hittegolf het Paul Roosers
na kreatiewe maniere laat soek om
lafenis te vind teen die genadelose
hitte.
Ter
ondersteuning van die #Temperature-
MustFall-veldtog het Paul Roosers in
hul massas opgeruk na die Antonij
Rupert Akwatiese Sentrum.
Paul Roosers ag natuurlik die vei-
ligheid van hul medebetogers baie
hoog en daar is eers seker gemaak
dat daar See-en-Sand-lewensredders
teenwoordig was voordat enige bom-
melakiesies gemaak is.
lik wou saamswem. Gelukkig is daar
altyd ’n volgende keer.
prop. Want, manne, daar is ’n ‘crucial’
eksamen op pad. Maar wat is drie
kort wekies ook nou eintlik? Voor-
spoed met die eksamen en geniet die
vakansie!

wer en 9 brons medaljes. Heinrich

Paul Roos hosted an exhibition
tennis match against one of the
most prestigious private schools in
England, Reed's Private School, dur-
ing one of the hottest weeks in South
African history.
Reed's Private School was founded
in 1813 in London and is one of the
top-performing English schools in
cultural activities, academics and
sport.
Wayne Montgomery, former Paul
Roos number one, once played in the
Junior Wimbledon Tournament with
one of the players from Reed's Private
School as his partner, and reached the
semi-final.
Reed's U/15 tennis team won the
annual World Championship for
Schools in 2011, so tight competi-
tion was expected for this exhibition
match.
Ms Olivier's class was renovated to
form a clubhouse to accommodate
the 16 players and 3 coaches from
both teams for a long and exciting
day of tennis.
Paul Roos went onto the courts in
the blistering heat to face-off against
the so-called “World Champions”.
The heat and competition proved to
be too much for the Londoners and
Paul Roos ended the day by winning
12-0 in matches.

Op 1 Oktober 2015 het ses Paul
Roosers, op uitnodiging van
Travel and Sport, saam met die top
10 leerders van talle skole regoor
Suid-Afrika vertrek na Boston, Mas-
sachusetts om deel te neem aan ’n
akademiese toer in Amerika.
Die maroenbaadjies het vir Wolf-
gang Wild, Reitz Broeksma, Johan
Schoeman, Julian Bock, Rijk de Wet
en James Steven ingesluit.
Na hul vlug van 23 ure via Johan-
nesburg en Dubai het die groep vier
dae in Boston deurgebring en heelwat
geskiedkundige besienswaardighede
ervaar, onder meer Paul Revere (die
onafhanklikheidstryd-ikoon) se
huis. Die groep het besoek afgelê by
Harvard Universiteit en het ’n lesing
oor gevorderde kankernavorsing en
behandeling bygewoon by die Mas-
sachusetts Instituut vir Tegnologie
(MIT).
en kampustoer by Yale Universiteit
gestop.
In New York het hulle die Empire
State-gebou se boonste verdieping
besoek om die Groot Appel van bo
te aanskou. Daar is ook besoek afgelê
aan die 9/11 Memorial, Central Park,
Times Square, the Museum of Natu-
Columbia.
Op pad na Washington het die
toergroep gestop by Princeton, tuiste
beroemde Abraham Lincoln-monu-
ment en die Smithsonian Museum-
reeks geleë is.
Die groep het ook die geleentheid
gehad om ’n yshokkie-wedstryd
tussen die Washington Capitals en
die New Jersey Devils in die Verizon
stadion te gaan kyk. Wat ’n belewenis!
Die meerderheid van die groep het
daarna teruggekeer na Suid-Afrika,
maar ’n kleiner groep leerders het ’n
opsionele bykomende toer na Or-
lando onderneem.
Die ekstra been het besoeke aan
menige pretparke ingesluit, asook
die Kennedy Space Center in Cape
Canaveral.

The titanic is a perfect example of how just the tip can get you into trouble.
Charl Smit
Dis weer daardie tyd van die jaar.
Stresvlakke loop hoog. Slaap-
vlakke neem af. Eksamentyd.
Eindjaar-eksamen is altyd ’n
“bulletjie”. Soos enige eksamen gaan
jy deur ’n “rollercoaster” van emo-
sies. Jy begin stadig, maar seker. Jy
hou styf vas en stabiliseer jouself. Die
eksamen/rollercoaster begin met ’n
steil opdraende. Angs met die eerste
draai, hartseer met die tweede draai,
en vrees met die derde draai. Jy maak
keer.
Net soos wat die rollercoaster die
laaste pylvak inbeweeg, bou twyfel en
onsekerheid in jou op.
Die aand voor jou eksamen is soos
die aand voor Kersfees. Tussendeur
die gerondrol, hoop jy vir ’n wonder-
werk! Almal ken die gevoel maar alte
goed! Die Concipio-span het by ken-
ners gaan inloer en op die volgende
eksamenwenke afgekom vir wanneer
jy ’n “breek” vat :
• “Refresh” jou Instagram “feed”.
• Beplan jou Desember-vakansie.
Dis stres-
vol. Wees ten alle tye optimisties, en
moenie gaan lê nie. Net swakkelinge
gaan lê. Onthou, jy mag maar huil,
want “as jy lag, is jy sag”. Vat die ek-
samen dag vir dag.
Met lekkerkry kan ons die swaarkry
klaarkry!
heime resep.
Goeiemôre Optimiste!

A long while ago – and yet perhaps it
wasn’t such a very long time ago, when
the world was full of wonders – a South
African super-group rose to the game.
And seventeen years later they are still
shining!
The Parlotones is a rock band from Jozi
and is known for genres such as indie-
rock and post-punk. The band, started
in 1998, is known for the face makeup
worn by lead singer Kahn Morbee.
Concipio’s very own Christoff Loubser
caught up with the band members.
You have such an international sound. But describe South Africa, the country you call home.
South Africa is my home, our home, and the band’s place they call home and therefore South Africa will be the place we call
home as long as the band exists. We’ve been all over the world and there is no place like it! –Neil Pauw-
Are you working on anything new?
We’ve just released our new album, Antiques & Artefacts, but will start writing for the next album soon. Enough said before I
reveal too much. Our frontman is also dedicated and ready to produce the ultimate winner of Voice South Africa.
–Paul Hodgeson-
Any embarrassing stories from the road?
Well we were once late for a very important live TV interview because we stopped for lunch… –Glen Hodgeson-
Who’s the worst driver on the road?
Definitely me, myself and I, but I only drove for 15 minutes so it’s not too bad. But otherwise Neil, he’s also the best driver off
the road. –Kahn Morbee-
What’s the band’s biggest vice/ secret?
Good times… No secrets, it’s all true. But on the other side if I tell you, it won’t be a secret anymore. –The Parlotones

The new Jam committee has been
elected and was announced last
week. Some info has slipped by my
ears and by the sound of it, there is
definitely a lot of new things to be
excited for Jam in 2016. For starters
we have Mr de Beer who is going to
be helping us with events. Jam has a
new logo and slogan.
Video announcements of upcoming
events will appear every Monday in
assembly. So if you are keen to share
a few words, come and visit us on a
Tuesday first break. Don’t forget to
follow us on the very famous Insta-
gram for your weekly verse updates.
As from next year the Jam ‘cell
groups’ will have a fantastic struc-
ture as all new cell leaders have been
coached by Mr Cloete.
It is clear that Jam is about to ex-
pand. Don’t miss out. Become a part
of PRG Jam and help us make disciple
makers.

Arnon Yasha Yves Grunberg
(44), ’n Duitser wat tans in New
York bly, se naam is amper so lank
like, ’n onderhoud in die Protea
Boekwinkel by Bergzicht Plaza in
Stellenbosch met die skrywer Arnon
Grunberg gevoer oor sy roman Tirza,
wat in 2006 gepubliseer is.
“Dié roman is alles behalwe ’n
cliché” was Lina Spies se opmerking.
bly.
Moraliteit is ’n motief wat sterk deur
die boek aangeraak word. Jou morele
kompas sal geöriënteer word en van
al die negatiewe invloede ontslae
raak. Grunberg se literêre talente het
vanaf vroeë ouderdom gewys. Op
19-jarige ouderdom het hy sy eerste
boek gepubliseer en op 23-jarige
ouderdom het hy ’n Europese “best
seller” geskryf.
Hy is ook verantwoordelik vir talle
internasionale rubrieke en kolomme
wat strek vanaf die “New York Time’s
Magazine” tot by Duitsland se dagb-
laaie.
Arnon Grunberg is ’n begaafde
skrywer. Sit Tirza op jou kluitklaplys.

as enige ander boek.

Paul Roos can once again lay claim to a sportsman at national level. JP Brits (Grade 11) has
been chosen again for the South African u/18 and u/20 Ice Hockey teams – he is leaving on the
12th of January next year for an International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) world champion-
ship tour to Mexico for the u/20 SA team. He will also play for the u/18 SA team in a champi-
onship held in March. Concipio went to investigate:
• Why do you enjoy participating in ice hockey?
Ice hockey is a very physical and fast game. It challenges quick thinking and I enjoy skating
very much. It never gets boring or repetitive. I am always challenged by others and myself to keep performing.
• When and how did you discover this passion for ice hockey?
I spent four years in Canada from the age 6-10. I learned how to skate there and then got into ice hockey because that
was what everybody was doing at the time. It was always fun to be able to play hockey on ice rinks in the park and to be
exposed to the sport. I then came back here and discovered the club where I have been playing ever since.
• Where and how do you train for ice hockey?
I train at Grand West three times a week. We spend about two hours on ice and do regular fitness to make sure we can
take hits, give hits and score goals.
• What other sports do you play and how has ice hockey helped you in these?
I played hockey for a while; fast thinking and good reaction time helped me when I played goalie. I think I learned
from the ice hockey goalies, which is why I had such a weird play-style when I played goalie in field hockey.
• What do you think are key aspects of a player with good sportsmanship?
Sportsmanship is just about being able to play well with others, being able to celebrate and being serious at the right
times. The team needs to function as a unit and as a good sportsman you need to realise that you are a key part of the
unit. If you are able to perform along with others and produce effective results then you are a good team-player and
sportsman. You also need determination and dedication.
• Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
One of my pre-game rituals is when I tape my socks to my shin pads; I only tape the top half of my sock. I don’t be-
lieve in pre-workout drinks because I believe that all my energy in a game has to come from me and not chemicals in a
bottle.
• Please describe the best achievement you received in ice hockey.
My best achievement has to be when we played against Iceland and lost 4-5, which is really good as they were the best
team in that tournament and beat all other teams. I was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) and received praise from
multiple people on how well I defended. Other than that, it would be making the team again.
After school, JP says he would like to go to university in either America or Canada and play ice hockey everyday while
he studies. He says it would be would be an amazing opportunity if he could get a bursary and be able to play for
America or Canada. We wish him the best of luck and hope that his prowess in ice hockey takes him far in life!
