not a detail
not a garment

but
an impression.”

LET´S GET THE BALL ROLLING !
Good morning! I am so excited to be here. I plan to speak about my favourite fashion illustrator of all times the one and only Tony Viramontes !
But first of all, let me introduce myself, my name is Javier Navia and I am a student of illustration at Murcia School of Arts. I’m also working in fashion since I was 15. I have decided to speak about the great Tony Viramontes, because he is my favourite fashion illustrator and one of the biggest referents in fashion and arts.
What I would like to do today is to explain why Tony is one of the best fashion illustrators of all times, to vindicate his work as one the most renowned names in fashion.
Also to give a general overview of the famous brands and clients that he worked with; to outline his biography and to have a look at his hard and direct style who began in the late 70´s.
I have divided my presentation into 3 parts: Biography, Main Famous Clients and Unique Style. Let me start with his biography
Tony Viramontes was born in 1956 in los Angeles, USA , son of Spanish and Mexican parents. He travelled extensively as a child.
He studied Fine Arts and Photography in New York at Fit & Parsons, before switching to fashion and beauty illustration.
When Viramontes made his debut in the late 70´s, his hard and direct style was a marked contrast to the prevailing soft pastel school of fashion illustration.
He meant an immediate success, rapidly acquiring the kind of prestigious editorial commissions too often advocated to photographers
Now let’s move onto the second part of this presentation that deals with his most renowned clients, From Lei, Per Lui in Italy, Vogue in the USA, The Face in Britain, as well as Jill Magazine , Marie Claire Le Monde and City Magazine in France.
Viramontes also worked with some of the most renowned names in fashion including Yves St. Laurent, Valentino, Versace, Chanel, Perry Ellis, Claude Montana and Rochas cosmetics
As well as creating portraits of Paloma Picasso and Diana Ross. The album covers he conceived for seminal artists of the period such as Duran Duran, Donna Summer and Janet Jackson, caught the glitzier mood of the 1980s
And to finish let me talk about his unique style, His striking images are of strong, dominant, aggressive yet feminine women, sensuous men, smoldering and smoky-eyed, who vibrate with New Wave energy.
He did not like to be labeled as an illustrator, and considered himself to be an artistic creator: a creator of ideas in images.
Tony Viramontes had great artistic potential, but he died in 1988 at the age of only 33. Three decades after his death, his work still shimmers with sensuality and a power that remains undimmed.
To conclude the presentation I will show you a video resume, I have limited my speech to 5 minutes, so before concluding I would like to thank Pedro de Alba and Murcia School of Arts for giving me this great opportunity, and after the video you could ask me any questions about the artist. So Let’s have a look at the video!
And that’s all I want to say about the great Viramontes. Thank you very much for your attention and if there are any questions or comments I will be delighted to answer them.
