1. Evaluations Of Different Set Designs
Sinner To Saint
The images above are the three images from a school play
called the ‘Sinner To Saint’. The set design looks very bold
with the style of graffiti to express what the play might be
about. Furthermore the colours scheme used are mostly very
vibrant and dark colours to make the whole set design stand
out. A lot of spaces have been used and the set design takes
up a lot of space, this might be so that the audience are able
to see every detail of the set design also so that the actors
can use a lot of space to perform while having a set design
behind them and creating the sort of atmosphere for that
particular scene or whole play. They have used a projector to
2. maybe chance set designs or make the actual set design look
unique, different and interesting to other set designs.
The set design looks very interesting as it might be very
appealing for younger people or other people who may have
an interesting in graffiti, bold and vibrant colours. I like the
fact that they have used a projector for the set design,
meaning that they wouldn’t have hand anyone moving things
around the stage to change the set design. Furthermore I like
the idea of the set designer suing a lot of space so that the
set design is the centre of attention and stand out.
However there are some things that I do not like such as only
having one set design throughout the play, this could affect
the audience by making them bored and not interested as
some scenes would not fully go well with the set design and
etc. The set design looks quite empty, this is because the
back ground of the set design is black and in the centre is a
drawing of the actual set design and nothing else. They could
have tried to add something on the balcony and painted
something to fill in that massive empty gaps between the set
design and the curtains
3. A Chance To Change
This is another school play called ‘A Chance To Change’ and
the set design is very different to the previous set design of
‘Sinner To Saint’. From the images above looks like there are
two/three different set designs for different scenes this could
mean that no one must of physically changed any set designs
as it was all on one stage. A lot of different colours have been
used to create a particular atmosphere also they have used
props on the set design such as a photo frame, papers or
work and they have used a wallpaper for their stage design.
The two different set signs in this play look very different to
each other as set design is an office and another one might
4. be school lockers. From the set design the audience might
have been able to guess what the play might be about. The
set designers have used a lot of space for the sets this is so
that the audience are able to see what’s happening on stage
with the set designs.
The set design for this play looks very different to the first
one as all the three set designs are all together, this is good
as no one would of moved anything around and therefore
there would of have been no confusing in terms of props
moving and being set for a particular scene. I love the fact
that the set designs have a combination of different colours
to represent different emotions through different sets. They
have used wallpaper for the set design to make it look very
much realistic also they have used real 3D lockers and not
drawn lockers to make the set design more useful. One thing
which I really like about the set design is how they have got a
pit below the stage meaning they would have played real life
music and they have drawn bricks onto a larger block to
create some sort of a building around the actual set design
and the pit, I also like how they have used a lot of space for
the set design and made well use out of it.
On the other hand there are some features of the set design
which I do not like and think they could have been improved.
I don’t like how the set designs are all cramped up together
and this creates a really claustrophobia feeling for the
audience meaning if the audience was not comfortable so
therefore they would of had a really negative audience
throughout the play. They should have prevented this from
happening if there were less fewer props on stage and maybe
they should off had one set design and then changed it for
the second scene only if it was meant to change.
5. Totally Over You
Above the four images, there are different costumes, trust
stage, different set designs and different backdrops. As this
musical was set in school so therefore the actors were given a
school uniform costume to wear so that through the type of
costume wear it would hinder to the audience that the
setting of this musical was based in a school. The school
uniform costumes for each of the acts were the same
however the styling of the uniform was very different as some
character did not wear a tie, some of them had not tucked
their t-shirts in and by doing this, this creates the actors
personality and how they might be like. The costume later
changes when the setting of the play changes into more of a
lively gig where performers where forming their songs. As you
can see above the four girls all look very different to each
other, and from this it can be easily said that each
6. characters have their own personal taste to clothes and they
all like different colours.
The shaping of this stage is a trust stage, the reason they
might of have chosen this staging as they might of thought
that it was a best way to do so as they might of wanted to
use the main stage to perform. On the image above is a bird’s
eye view of the stage and how it looks. The staging looks very
good as performers would be able to be seen, however if they
had used Arena staging it would have been quiet difficult for
all the audience members to see what would be happening
and not everyone would see the performers facial expression
to help them understand the musical a little bit more.
The set designs for this musical is very simply but very
effective, they do not have that much of set designs which
were on the whole time, however they have three little cubed
boxes which the performers could use when they need to use
it. Furthermore as many things/people would be walking
around it would have been quiet easy to do so as there are
not many set designs on stage. If they had not used any set
designs the play would have looked empty and not as
interesting as it looks.
This musical have two backdrops, the first one is a massive
red certain, the certain used for this play looks very good as
it makes the stage look bigger as well, also because it is red it
makes it more effective. The backdrop goes really well with
the set designs and the positioning of the characters, as seen
on the images above. The second backdrop looks very
different to the first one. As the first one was very simple,
however the second backdrop look well detailed and has
more colour. The backdrop goes well with the costume of the
performers wearing, from this, it can be clearly identified that
7. some of the scenes in this play might have been an out door
party or a gig.
