Challenges of conserving great apes while meeting local development needs Development and Conservation Dialogue
Commonalities Humans • Need forests for forest products • Agricultural food crops • Health needs • Intellect Great Apes • Need forests as their home • Most of the agricultural food crops are a delicacy for the apes • Diseases that afflict humans also afflict apes • Great apes are closely related to humans (99%) genetic similarity
Conflicts • Habitat loss due to: conversion, degradation, urbanization etc. • Crop raiding resulting into: food insecurity, poor health, increased poverty • Results: Conflicting relations – death and maiming of apes, sick, poor and impoverished people
How do we address such conflicts?
