Running head: Honesty vs. Plagiarism
Honesty vs. Plagiarism, extreme points of the college student life, is an issue that has
become fashionable in these last few years, because the current increase and the reiteration of
these dishonest acts by students has been forcing academic centers to express their discomfort in
the absence of ethical student rigor. Honesty is a word claimed by universities to students so that
they don’t commit acts of dishonesty like crib or similar compulsive behavior.
The campus of Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile [P.U.C.C], in January of 2008
recognizing its concern for the lack of integrity of students published on its website that
dishonesty is a non-ethical imperative quality that rests credibility. Also, honesty is the greatest
moral heritage to exercise its social responsibility. It shows the relationship between ethics,
morality, responsibility and the witness’s credibility in the social role of the student that can be
synthesized with the word honesty. The quality of the honest person is a great value, but if it isn’t
inside of the person when he is still young, it would be difficult to get it in the adult world. This
concept can be related well to everything people are doing. The triad attitude (honesty-> love->
professional vocation) has to share it hand in hand. But, if never a person learned to love what
they do, perhaps it will be difficult to be honest; and without vocation the word honesty sounds
like a very lonely term. Near of us, are a lot of people don’t know what is right and what is not
right (Boff, Chap. 2.1). The increase of dishonest and fraudulent attitudes among college
students is also a consequence of the current crisis of values in our society. This abandonment of
good habits of conduct caused a decline in ethical values of good student.
Michel Foucault, the French philosopher, said that our society rests on the truths of the
science and that it’s a strong power institution in our society. He said that “In science, there are
models of truth whose formation is the product of the political structures that are not imposed

from the outside to the subject of the knowledge they are themselves constitutive of this”
(Bellocchio & Garcia). The strict form of the scientific method requires us to summon the
academic authorities related to definitions and all academic publication. Also, many of the
publications are of academic origin, which rest in turn on the scientific authority. The university
student is obliged to accredit the intellectual author of the reference. Irene Clark, Professor of
English and Director of composition at the Northridge University of the State of California,
wrote that a charge of plagiarism can bring serious consequences in the academic life of the
student and the professional (Page 190). This is one of the reasons why students should be aware
of the importance of being honest.
Just imagine for a moment that an author not credited academically published in a journal
of cancer research that "cat poop can help cure cancer". It’s not the same that a magazine of
popular prestige post that "a team of scientists from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth-
Hitchcock Medical Center (U.S.) has discovered that a parasite that is found in the feces of cats
could serve to create a vaccine against cancer" (Muy Interesante, 07-21-2014). The two
references are expressions of the same truth. The example, showed the importance of properly
citing references bibliographic publications.
The ethics of the university students must be "in the fundamentals of the moral law". (F.
Collins. Page 259). But, the current values in our modern society crisis have called into question
the veracity of moral Puritan values affecting the moral of students (Moral Education). Students
ethic and moral must be related in order to achieve their goal (or his dream) of be some day a
good professional. So, the student must study and not copy, make own practical work and not
copied from his partner. The student, whom ignores this reality, can be harmful even for the

future of his college career and be will not prepared properly in order to be a good professional
tomorrow.
We can’t forget to put the correct reference in the bibliography, because the scientific
method requires using the quote of the academic authorities related to definitions and all
academic publication. After I had read a commentary of Sara Ortiz, I could say that honesty has
to have a romantic side to be able to exercise their appeal; the rigor of the law not always
encourages the individual to good work (Read in Prov. 23:13-14 AKJV, the words ‘correction
from the child’,’rod’,’hell’). But when romanticism with students doesn’t work, then is necessary
to put strongly rules (Read in Prov. 13:24 AKJV the words ‘rod’, ‘chasteneth’). A good moral is
the standard expectation for all students.
I even remember that "the early Christians, from both the Jewish people and the pagan,
differed from the pagans not only by their faith and its liturgy, but also by the testimony of moral
conduct, inspired by the new law" (Pope Juan Pablo II). Honesty would not be a new fashion
and is not optional. Also, each of us must to decide what we do. The consequence of the
dishonesty in the life of a student can be terrible.
In conclusion, if we want to be authentic professionalism, honesty should be taken into
account by us as students. Plagiarism is not permitted on any aspect of our professional life. To
be honest is the smart choice.
