This text is the last relaxed moment where we will see Jesus spending time with His disciples. This early Seder is his final training of them and in the Upper Room. Jesus will take familiar forms and infuse them with new meaning, setting up a new covenant which would soon be sealed on the cross as he pours out his blood for many.

When was the Last Supper?
Matthew 26:17-20
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.
An apparent contradiction:
The Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, & Luke) all depict the Last Supper as a Passover meal.
The natural conclusion is that the Last Supper takes place on Thursday of Holy Week.
The Gospel of John clearly states that the Last Supper occurs “on the Day of Preparation” which is 1 day before the Passover. It is also clear that the Jews refuse to enter Pilate’s residence. That is because of their laws; if they entered a pagan home, they could not eat the Passover.
John 13:1
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The typical approaches to this difficulty are:
Prefer the synoptic record and disregard John
Prefer John’s chronology and dismiss the synoptic record.
Assert that the Synoptic gospel writers use a different calendar than John and both are describing the same day.
Harmonize the two records without twisting either text.
I would suggest that there is a way to accomplish this without distorting either record. However, this requires a careful understanding of the parallels that exist with the Passover calendar and also an understanding of the way that Jews counted days and nights. For some of you this is a bit of a review but some of us have probably never heard this.
Our days start at midnight and end at midnight.
Jews considered the day to begin at sunset and end at the next sunset.
If we take this into account, both the Day of Preparation and the Passover occur one day earlier according to how we reckon time.
This still does not resolve whether the Last Supper was a Passover.
Great scholars divide on this question, and it would be confusing if I laid out everybody’s arguments for and against. My preaching mentor taught us to preach our conclusion, so here it is.
I believe that the Last Supper occurs one day before the Passover for some very good reasons.
The synoptic authors are correct in asserting that the Last Supper certainly looks like a Passover seder.
Jews normally ate sitting up. However, on special holidays, like Passover, they ate reclining on couches close to the floor. In the Last Supper, they are reclining.
The flow of events fits the Passover. They eat within the city limits, a requirement of the Passover. There is bread and ritual cups of wine. They typically drank water with meals. The disciples are charged with implementing Passover preparations. After the meal, they sing.
John clearly indicates that this takes place a day earlier.
So, how do we resolve this?
I side with those scholars who assert that Jesus put together a special Passover like meal one day earlier.
Who is the betrayer?
Matthew 26:21-25
21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

What is the Lord’s Supper?
Matthew 26:26-30
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the[c] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”

6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
