In this sermon we will explain James exhortation in James 1:19-25 to be not only hearers of the Word, but doers also. There is a form of spiritual obesity where we are so focused on learning more and more, but fail to exercise our faith. True spiritual growth occurs when we both hear and heed God's Word.

- 3. First Point When we hear God’s Word we learn from Him.
- 4. Amos 8:11 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.
- 5. James 1 19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
- 6. James 1 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
- 7. James 1 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

- 11. Second Point When we heed God’s Word we receive His blessing.
- 12. James 1 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- 13. Jeremiah 11 6And the LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them.
- 14. Jeremiah 11 7For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, Obey my voice.
- 15. 8Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.”
- 16. James 1 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- 17. James 1 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
- 18. James 1 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
- 19. James 1 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
