Respiratory System
 The respiratory system include organs such as the nasal cavity,
pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchial tubes, and the lungs.
 Medications such as mucolytics, antihistamines, and
corticosteroids are often times used to help the process of
making it easier to breathe.

Mucomyst
 Brand name: Mucomyst
 Generic name: acetylcysteine
 Classification: Mucomyst is a mucolytic.
 Word part:
 muc/o = mucus
 -lytic = destruction
 Mechanism of Action: Mucolytics are used to liquefy mucus so
that it is easier to cough up and clear mucus from the
respiratory tract.

 Examples of Mucolytic drugs include N-acteyl-cysteine,
Acetadote, Mucosil.
 Side effects: headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting,
drowsiness, etc.

 Brand name: Allegra
 Generic name: fexofenadine
 Classification: Allegra is an antihistamine.
 Word part:
 Anti = against
 Mechanism of Action: Antihistamines block the release of
histamine by the body during an allergy attack.

(Claritin), diphenydramine (Benadryl), etc.
 Side effects include confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea,
etc.

 Classification: Flonase is a corticosteroid.
 Word part:
 cortic/o = outer region, cortex
 Mechanism of Action: Corticosteroids are used to reduce
inflammation and swelling in the respiratory tract.

triamcinolone (Azmacort), etc.
 Side effects of corticosteroids are headache, dryness of the
nose, nosebleed.
