TABLE OF CONTENTS
6. For Hudson, Skyler, Keina and every member
of the next generation of explorers of the
new frontiers of our imagination
ABOUT THIS BOOK
NEW FRONTIERS: The Many Worlds of George Takei was
developed as a companion volume to the groundbreaking
exhibition of Takei’s life and legacy, presented by the Japanese
American National Museum (janm.org) from March through August
2017. The works in this anthology are inspired by the five “worlds”
of that exhibition — worlds that cover Takei’s childhood in America’s
World War II concentration camps, his rise to stardom in Hollywood,
his activism on behalf of the LGBTQ community and his fight for the
civil rights of other marginalized communities and his emergence as
an icon of the digital world. Each of the five chapters
is introduced by a segment of Takei’s own life story, as told by the
man himself while he tours the exhibition that recounts it. The five
chapters of the book, mirroring the exhibition’s “worlds,” are
1: ALIEN NATION [being “other”]; 2: FRAMED! [media image &
stereotypes]; 3: FOR OUR LOVE [LGBTQ identity & culture];
4: JUSTICE FOR ALL [civil rights & resistance]; and 5: INTERNET
FAMOUS [social media & digital culture]. If you are fortunate
enough to see the exhibition, this book is meant to enhance and
extend that experience. But if you haven’t seen it, it stands fully alone
as a work that we hope you deeply enjoy!
For Hudson, Skyler, Keina and every member
of the next generation of explorers of the
new frontiers of our imagination

“AS A CHILD, my mexican-American grandmother worked in 100+ degree heat,
picking fruit out of dry fields. Her first language was Spanish.”
“AS A CHILD, my mexican-American mother was reprimanded for speaking spanish in class. she
changed her name to help her assimilate into a world that did not accept her as she was born.”
“AS A CHILD, I never learned spanish. my parents used it like a secret code around me.”
“AS A CHILD, I was made fun of because I didn’t speak spanish. I was teased and ridiculed for
‘Talking white’ in the middle of beginner spanish classes, so I stopped trying.”

Lately Politics have entered my
dreams and made them Trump
disaster nightmares.
In one of my dreams, Trump
somehow made the government
use a satellite to change THE
course of an asteroid to decimate
a neighborhood.
THE neighborhood was my home -- The
“Projects” in NEW YORK’S Lower East Side.
After he eradicated my neighborhood…
...we were uprooted and forced into internment camps, so GOLDEN
HIGH-RISES FOR THE wealthy could BE BUILT TO REPLACE OUR HOMES.

Over the first eight decades of his life, George Takei went from seeing the world
through barbed wire fences as an incarcerated Japanese American at Tule Lake, to
starring as one of the first regular Asian American characters on TV in a show that broke
boundaries of color and representation, to helping reshape society through his activism
and civic leadership — including redefining the very nature of the institution of marriage
with his advocacy of LGBT marriage equality — before developing the first Broadway
musical created, directed by and starring Asian Americans, and then emerging with an
unexpected new chapter in life as one of the most beloved and influential personalities
on the burgeoning landscape of social media.
Published as a companion to the Japanese American National Museum’s exhibition
of the same name, NEW FRONTIERS uses Takei’s incredible journey as a launching pad
for the imaginations of a breathtaking array of diverse creators — Asian, black, Hispanic
and Native American; lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans — telling original stories about
incarceration and exclusion, representation and resistance, the digital world and the
struggle in the streets.
New Frontiers was edited by Jeff Yang and Keith Chow, two of the editors behind the
groundbreaking Asian American anthologies Secret Identities and Shattered. Notable
contributors include Greg Pak (Totally Awesome Hulk), Shawn Martinbrough
(Batman: Detective Comics), Ming Doyle (Constantine), David F. Walker (Power Man
and Iron Fist), Jeffrey Veregge (Black Panther), Melanie Tingdahl (Lumberjanes), Chris
Visions (Dead Letters), Vince Hernandez (Fathom), Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex),
Brandon Easton (Marvel’s Agent Carter), Christine Norrie (Black Canary Wedding Al-
bum), Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez (La Borinqueña), Jamie Ford (Hotel on the Corner
of Bitter and Sweet), Lisa Yee (DC Super Hero Girls), Lewis Tan (Marvel’s Iron Fist), LaToya
Morgan (AMC’s Into the Badlands), Reiko Aylesworth (Fox’s 24) and indie standouts like
Arielle Jovellanos, Trungles, Yumi Sakagawa, Robin Ha and MariNaomi.
