Peterkay clip
1. The popular comedian Peter Kay appeared on Galaxy in 2010 to plug his up and coming tour which
was a major (soft) news story as it was his first in seven years. Right from the start of the interview,
there is an early indicator of the interview's tone. This is easy to tell in the broadcaster's voice, rather
than speaking formally (as you would hear on BBCR4 for instance) he speaks in a broad Northern
accent, specifically a Mancunian dialect. In our own interview, the broadcaster will most likely speak in
his own Northern accent, as not to alienate listeners.
When Kay arrives in the studio, the presenter greets him with 'how are ya Pete?' which emphasises
the laid-back, casual mood of the interview. I think this is the best way to conduct an interview as it
makes the guest more relaxed and therefore creates a more down-to-earth atmosphere for listeners.
Throughout the majority of the interview, Kay derives most of the laughs through his anecdotes; also
delivered in an informal manner. One of the funny stories Kay tells was at the start, when he talked
about the labrador that used to jump up at him when he went to his local shop. Perhaps we will
include this form of humour when introducing the comedian "Cheeks" in our own show. Another
convention of radio interviews included in the audio was the form of address both the presenter and
guest used. An examples of this was when the excitable radio host moved right into the microphone
and screeched "PETER KAY IS HERE!" - like he was sharing exclusive information with the listener.
Peter Kay used the direct mode of address when he said "hello everybody in the Greater Manchester
region" which involves the listeners into the interview, almost as if they were in the audience at one of
his shows. Our group will also implement this mode of address by greeting the OCR listeners at the
start.
