A. Remove the final drive, the steering clutch, and the brake from the machine. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive, Steering Clutch, and Brake - Remove".

1. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the steering clutches and brakes (1) .

2. Remove bolts (2) .
3. Remove steering clutches and brakes (1) from the final drive. The weight of steering
clutches and brakes (1) is approximately 181 kg (400 lb).
4. Remove O-ring seal (3) from steering clutches and brakes (1) .

Required Tools
Start By:
A. Separate the final drive, the steering clutch, and the brake. Refer to Disassembly and
Assembly, "Final Drive, Steering Clutch, and Brake - Separate".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.

1. Remove bolts (1) and plate (2) .
2. Remove sleeve bearings (3) from plate (2) .
3. Remove input hub (4) .

4. Remove clutch plates (5) and friction discs (6) from hub assembly (7) .
5. Remove piston (8) and sleeve bearing (9) from hub assembly (7) .
6. Remove seals (10) and (11) from piston (8) .

7. Turn over the hub and brake assembly. The weight of the hub and brake assembly is
approximately 127 kg (280 lb).
8. Remove ring (12) from hub assembly (7) .
9. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to housing (13). Remove the brake
assembly from hub assembly (7). The weight of the brake assembly is approximately 86 kg
(190 lb).

10. Remove bearing (14) from housing (13) .
11. Remove rings (15) and bearing (16) from hub assembly (7) .
Personal injury can result from parts under high spring pressure.
Spring force can cause parts to come off suddenly. Contact your
Caterpillar dealer for disassembly instructions before removing any
parts.

Note: Make sure that you remove bolts (17) before you remove bolts (19). Bolts (19) hold a
spring that is under compression.
12. Remove bolts (17) and plate (18) from housing (13) .
13. Remove brake plates (20) and friction discs (21) from the housing.
Personal injury can result from parts under high spring pressure.
Spring force can cause parts to come off suddenly. Contact your
Caterpillar dealer for disassembly instructions before removing any
parts.

Note: Make sure that you slowly loosen and evenly loosen bolts (19) .
14. Remove bolts (19) and manifold assembly (22) from housing (13) .
15. Remove seals (23) and (24) from manifold assembly (22) .

16. Remove piston (25) from housing (13) .
17. Remove springs (26) from housing (13) .
Note: Note the direction of spring (26) before removing.
18. Remove O-ring seals (27) and (28) .

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts.
Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are
worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

1. Install springs (26) into housing (13) .
2. Install O-ring seals (27) and (28) .
3. Position piston (25) into housing (13) .
4. Install seals (23) and (24) on manifold assembly (22). Put clean oil on the lip of the seals.

5. Align the oil holes in manifold assembly (22) with the holes in housing (13). Install
manifold assembly (22) and bolts (19) .
6. Raise the temperature of bearing (16) and install bearing (16) onto hub assembly (7).
Bearing (16) must be seated squarely on the hub assembly after bearing (16) has cooled.
7. Install rings (15) onto hub assembly (7) .

8. Install bearing (14) into housing (13) .
9. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to housing (13) and lower the housing into
position on hub assembly (7) .
10. Install ring (12) onto hub assembly (7) .

11. Start with a plate and install brake plates (20) and friction discs (21). Alternate brake plates
(20) and friction discs (21) .
12. Install plate (18) and bolts (17) onto housing (13) .

13. Install sleeve bearing (9) into hub assembly (7) .
14. Install seals (10) and (11) into piston (8) .
15. Put clean oil on the seals and install piston (8) into hub assembly (7) .

16. Install input hub (4) .
17. Start with a plate and install clutch plates (5) and friction discs (6). Alternate clutch plates
(5) and friction discs (6) .

18. Install sleeve bearing (3) into plate (2) .
19. Position plate (2) onto the housing and install bolts (1) .
End By: Connect the final drive, the steering clutch, and the brake. Refer to Disassembly and
Assembly, "Final Drive, Steering Clutch, and Brake - Connect".

2. Adjust bracket (1) until Dimension (X) is equal to 55 mm (2.0 inch).
3. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to final drive (3) .

7. Remove Tooling (A) .

Start By:
a. Remove the outer axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to
Operation and Maintenance, "Final Drive Oil - Change".
2. Remove bolts (1). Block sprocket segment (2) with suitable cribbing.
3. Install Tooling (A). Remove bolts (3). Slide final drive planetary carrier (4) to the end of
Tooling (A).

4. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to final drive planetary carrier (4). Apply
tension.
5. Remove the nuts from Tooling (A) and remove final drive planetary carrier (4). The weight
of final drive planetary carrier (4) is approximately 100 kg (220 lb). Remove the O-ring seal
from final drive planetary carrier (4).
6. Remove bolts (5) and retainer (6).

7. Use Tooling (C) to remove ring gear (7). The weight of ring gear (7) is approximately 41 kg
(90 lb).
8. Use Tooling (D) (not shown) to remove seal (9).

9 ± 0.25 mm (0.3543 ± 0.0098 inch).

2. Use Tooling (C) to install ring gear (7). The weight of ring gear (7) is approximately 41 kg
(90 lb).
3. Install retainer (6) and bolts (5). Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 122 ± 20 N·m
(90 ± 15 lb ft).
4. Install the O-ring seal on final drive planetary carrier (4).
5. Install Tooling (B) on final drive planetary carrier (4).
6. Use Tooling (B) to position final drive planetary carrier (4) on Tooling (A). Install the nuts
on Tooling (A). The weight of final drive planetary carrier (4) is approximately 100 kg
(220 lb). Remove Tooling (B).
