Editor's Notes
To bring these big ideas to life requires, not only a strong culture, but also a clear strategy.
Our strategy has 4 points:
We need to “Be Global”, maintaining a strong local presence around the world.
“Drive Innovation” is our focus on R&D and leadership in technology and content.
We need to continually “Build Relationships” with customers and partners around the world (because we can’t always go it alone).
And lastly, we need to “Leverage Strengths”, which means using everything we are—our size, expertise, financial capability, as well as our brand.
And what makes us one company is our commitment to a shared culture and practices.
It’s about our people—developing leaders and holding to high standards of integrity.
We are a culture of management and learning, fostering both meritocracy and teamwork.
For example:
[highlight one or two of these factoids]
We have a $1 billion training budget that provides $30K for each entry-level hire in year one.
And over the course of 15 years, our 189 most-senior executives spent at least 12 months in training and professional development.
This culture results in a retention rate of greater than 95%.
And it’s about our performance—delivering excellence in growth, productivity, and risk management.

LOCAL NORDIC EXAMPLE
An airline’s choice of engines is important to its ultimate performance — but its flight management system (FMS) can also make a dramatic difference. For Boeing 737 operators in Europe, a TrueCourse™ profile using GE’s FMS has helped airlines achieve lower fuel costs, reduced emissions and less noise.
The FMS enables pilots to determine, while maintaining a highly efficient cruise altitude, the exact point where the throttle can be reduced to flight idle while allowing the aircraft to arrive precisely at the required runway approach point without the need for throttle increases. This optimization procedure, referred to as a continuous descent approach, lowers fuel burn.
The groundbreaking effort was initiated at SAS Scandinavian Airlines, where the approach saved hundreds of pounds of fuel and reduced emissions throughout 2008. SAS estimates that from a potential 36,000 TrueCourse™ descents yearly into Stockholm alone, annual benefits could reach $6 million in fuel savings.
“The TrueCourse™ available through GE’s advanced FMS enables us to operate much more efficiently considering today’s air traffic challenges and economic pressures,” said Niels-Eirik Nertun, Environmental Director, Scandinavian Airlines. “Through partnerships such as this, and with a leader in FMS technology and operations like GE, we were able to significantly reduce our operating costs.”
Environmental Benefit
A typical narrow-body plane utilizing GE’s Flight Management System TrueCourse™ 50 percent of the time would avoid the emission of over 280 metric tons of CO2 per year based on a representative study, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of over 50 cars on U.S. roads.
Operating Benefit
If a typical fleet of twenty-nine 737NG aircraft could fly GE’s Flight Management System TrueCourse™ 50 percent of the time, this would reduce annual fuel consumption by over 600,000 gallons based on a representative study, saving over $1.2 million per year at an average jet fuel price of $2.00/gallon.

The GE symbol was developed by an engineer who was working on this fan, which by the way was hyper-modern in 1896.
We needed a way to identify the fan as a GE product, so the engineer fashioned a logo out of wire, which ultimately became the primary identification for our company.
The GE Monogram as we call it has become familiar to generations over the years, and it has become a symbol of innovation…
Much like the evolution of GE’s taglines (11 over the past 92 years),
the GE monogram has evolved since its origin in the 1890s.
Today’s monogram continues the tradition of being contemporary.
It proudly represents the foundational attributes of our brand – trusted, leader, dependable, contemporary – while looking to today’s aspirations – global, innovative, dynamic, approachable.
The introduction of colour in 2004 reflects results from market research, judged as more contemporary and approachable than the black/white versions.
