Body Positivity
Google body positivity. Your screen will be flooded with pictures of women of many colors, sizes,
and ages. Scroll through these pictures, and you will notice that males are hugely under–represented
within the context this trend. Body positivity in modern mainstream culture often focuses on the
sexualization of women and glosses over the negative message to which men are exposed. This
cultural desire to be muscular, "shredded," and "ripped" has led to a rise in body dysmorphia in
men, which can have severe consequences on the development and growth of boys both mentally
and physically. The media often encourages all body shapes in women, however, larger men are
objects of comedy, and frail men are epitomes of a "nerd" or "geek". Just like women, many men
struggle with body dysmorphia, but do not speak of it because societal norms encourage them to
suppress their feelings.
Body dysmorphia develops at a young age. Boys grow up idolizing star athletes and typical "alpha"
males. Seeing massive 6–foot–tall men with over 200lbs of muscle, they begin to desire and imitate
these physiques. Even on television, men are often shirtless to show off their chiseled pecs and their
six–pack abs. Children growing up with these images believe that this is the ideal man and the body
they should have. While little girls had the ideal "Barbie" body, a 2002 study called "Men and
Masculinities" reveals how children's toys in the 1990s exceeded "the muscularity of even the largest

The Body And Soul Essay
Topic Two: The Body and Soul In St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica Question 76 Article 1,
Aquinas discusses the union of the soul with the body. Throughout this paper, I will examine what
Aquinas means by the term soul and why he thinks that the soul must be thought as the form of the
man. There is much debate between philosophers on how the body and soul exist amongst each
other. Aquinas believes that the soul is in the body, however it is not contained by it but rather
containing it. To elaborate on this, Aquinas believes that the soul is not a substance in a living
human because it is not a complete thing. In other words, the soul is matter. Therefore, in a living
human, the soul must exist in the body. This means that the soul is the form of the body because of
its ability to actualize energy of the body. The soul is subsistent to the body, yet they have
independent existences. Aquinas states that the soul is the first principle of the life. He believes the
soul is the difference between animate and inanimate objects. The body cannot exist without the soul
because the soul allows the body to fulfill itself. To better understand this, we should discuss how
actuality and potentiality fit in. Aquinas was big fan of Aristotle and took a lot of his philosophies
and work and made them his own. Aristotle used potentiality and actuality to analyze motion,
causality, ethics, and physiology in his metaphysical works. So where does this come in to play for
the soul? Aquinas

Mind And Body Essay example
The mind and body are said to be two different entities that have different characteristics. Many have
argued that each holds its own properties and can be without the other. In my opinion, the mind and
body are distinguishable in there properties but are derived from the other. The mind and body are
codependent on each other and need the other in making decisions. The mind requires the body to
learn, experience so as to make accurate judgments, while the body requires the mind to make its
decisions for it. Without one or the other, I feel they would not be able to exist.
The mind and the body coexist together and thrive on the other by using the others traits. Many
argue that a human's death is not death...show more content...
It needs the body to experience. The mind cannot feel a desk or smell a flower. It needs the body to
relate those findings so that later it can make a judgment or decision on past knowledge. The mind
later can use its past experiences and knowledge to make decisions that are relevant for that time.
A quick example of how the mind and body are dependent is in the new technological revolution.
A.I. or artificial intelligence is a computer that learns on its own. It is a computer that is able to
experience and learn. The computer learns from using its senses, may they be wheels not legs or
sensors rather than eyes in this case, to teach itself. For example, a computer could hit an object
that is obstructing its path. It then stores its findings to help in its future decisions. Since the
computer, like a mind, learns through its experiences by using the body it now knows that when
there is an obstacle in its path to go around, over or under and not through it. It uses its body to
learn therefore both the mind, computer, is dependant on its body, robot. With the mind being
dependant on the body one could argue that without the body the mind would cease to exist. This
is true but is also true for the body not existing with the mind. It uses the body to make decisions
almost like a puppet. If the mind feels the body needs food it makes the decision to have the body
walk from point A to point B and eat an apple. The body however needs the

Media and Body Image Essay example
Often, people of all ages, race, and gender catch themselves gazing into mirrors for hours, blaming
themselves for the way they look, not realizing that the media is actually the one to blame for
many people's body image. Body image is the way people see themselves, or how they assume
other people see them. It is not likely to see a plus sized model in a magazine or a model on the
runway with blemishes on her face. A person's negative perception of their own body is not
because they think it is wrong to look and be healthy; it is because the media is telling them that
being a size 2 with flawless skin is healthy and beautiful. If so many people are claiming that looks
do not matter and beauty only runs skin–deep, then why does the...show more content...
Basically, these companies are promising healthy weight loss only to make money, knowing that in
the end, it is only false advertisement. The worst thing about the media being such a big influence
on children and adults is that no one in the media is willing to change the obsession with perfection.
As people become more influenced, ill, and provoked, the media only continues to only publish
magazines with stick thin models with perfect features. Basically, the media is doing nothing but
using subliminal messages. The way they portray the models in magazines, it only confuses a
human's mind. This makes them believe that they must look like them to be considered beautiful.
Often in magazines, when positive values, success, love, and happiness, a thin person is shown.
This not only completely lowers a "healthy", or a plus sized person's self–esteem, but the media also
tries to make it seem as if in order to be happy and successful, a person must be skinny (Piazza).
Every day, companies come up with a new beauty product, or a new diet product to leer someone
into buying it to make themselves beautiful. New products every day completely sets aside the idea
that natural beauty is already beautiful enough. According to the media, though, people need these
products to look more humane, or look younger and thinner. The media also using editing and
