The document provides an evaluation of improvements made from a preliminary editing task to the final production. Six key areas are discussed:
1) Proper use of the 180 degree rule, mise-en-scene, match on action, focus pull, shot reverse shot, and camera work improved the continuity and professionalism of the final product compared to the preliminary task.
2) Lighting was used more effectively to set the proper mood, with dark colors creating an evil feeling in the opening sequence and cloudy outdoor lighting suiting a thriller genre.
3) Unwanted items were removed from shots and the shots were better organized and planned in the final version after learning mistakes made in the preliminary task.

Learning from My Preliminary Editing
1. Evaluation question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task
(continuity editing), what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
2. Introduction
Compared to my prelim video I have made some
improvements to my final product. In the following
evaluation I will discuss six points that highlight how I
have improved from my prelim to the final production.
I will talk about the following things:
180 degree rule
Mise en scene
Match on action
Focus pull
Shot reverse shot
Camera work (using the tripod more carefully)
3. Lighting
Lighting is very important because it gives the scene the right
mood. As you can see in my prelim e used low key lighting when
Lexi and Dan are sitting in the restaurant waiting for their dinner. I
think it is not the right lighting because it does not create a romantic
feeling for the audience.
We learned from our prelim that lighting is very important because
it creates the right mood. For example in our opening sequence we
used dark colours to make it look evil. We also went out to film on a
day when it was very cloudy outside because the light was not to
bright and that made a good lighting for a thriller.
It is always important to have the right lighting for the right genre.
4. Mise en scene
In our preliminary task the shots were not really organised. You can
see in this scene that the tripod is in the shot while Lexi is getting
ready. This was one of the mistakes we made as we filmed our
prelim.
As opposite to our prelim we made sure that all of the unwanted
items where not in the shot while we were filming our opening
sequence. We learnt from our prelim that we have to organise
our shots more carefully and that we had to think about them
harder than we did before. Because we have done this our
opening sequence looks professional and we don’t had to re-film
lots of shots.
5. Match on action
In our prelim we used the match on action when
Lexi is opening the door. We tried to improve the match on action in
our final product because we learned from our prelim that this
technique has be edit carefully so in the end it will look
continuous.
There is a big jump between the two scenes and that it is not
looking continuous. But we learned from this mistake and as you
can see in our final product we have created a good match on
action.
6. Focus pull
In our prelim we haven’t used the focus pull. But when I
look back to my research I can see that a focus pull is
a necessary convention of a thriller genre. I knew that
we will need this convention because it allows the
audience to concentrate just on one thing. As you can
see in our opening sequence we wanted to put the
focus on the girl first because she is our main
character and we wanted to show that she is worried.
After that we putted the focus on the man because we
wanted to show the audience what the girl is worried
about.
7. Camera work
The last point I am talking about is camera work.
As you can see in my prelim the camera is often a bit shaky. This is
one thing I wanted to improve in my final product because it
makes the footage more professional. To achieve this I used the
tripod which helped me to made the moves more flowed and
continues.
Because of the shaky footage I knew that the tripod is really
needed in my opening sequence because without it my
production would look less professional.
To make a good opening sequence I looked back at my research
and found out that different angles are also very important
because they create different meanings.
