2. Future is Bright
LFW S/R18
Just when the ennui begins to set in at fashion weeks, and the old geniuses appear a spent
force, along comes sunshine with the promise that future is bright. The 25th batch of 5 Gen
Next designers presented by INIFD opened Day One at Lakmé Fashion Week
Summer/Resort 2018 with collections that were not only creative but also totally diverse in
design and construction. The Gen Next shows since 2006 have brought great talent that has
made an impact on the Indian fashion scene. Top designers like Rahul Mishra, Nachiket
Barve, Masaba Gupta, Ujjawal Dubey, Nida Mahmood, Aneeth Arora, Rimzin Dado to
name a few got their big break through the Gen Next shows and have turned into fashion
icons. When two design graduates come from the prestigious Istituto Marangoni, Paris
with experience of working with Rick Owens, the collection has to be eye-catching. The
look by Anvita Sharma and Asit Barik was replete with fluid garments that revealed
flawless clean lines since the over-sized creations were genderless and ideal for all sizes and
shapes, thus offering a liberating fashion feel. For their label ‘TwoPointTwo’ the pair called
the collection “Gyne-Andro-Philia” that eliminated the stereotyping in fashion. The motto
of the collection was Typically Atypical. Thread work and appliqués pushed the message of
Beauty in Imperfection created from fabric waste. Careful detailing worked perfectly for the
easy silhouettes that spoke a genderless language and revolved around sustainable fashion.
The highlight of the collection was the wide range of fabrics that moved from cotton suiting
to silk organza, while the appliqué embroidery with intricate thread handwork was perfect.
The colour palette worked around white, grey, black with hints of cameo rose and misty
green. Catering to both sexes, the garments could be seamlessly interchanged by men and
women without any fashion pointers. Comfy checked pleated skirts, bralets, jumpsuits,
sheer covers, striped maxis, shirts with extra-long elongated sleeves, floppy tops and easy
garments had a splash of artisanal craft that added to the nearly anti-fashion look.

3. Breaking Free
Christian Dior RTW Spring/Summer 2018
Paris Fashion Week
This is a much awaited event for the fashion forward community,
the Paris Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2018 ready-to-wear. And
within that, Christian Dior, now celebrating its 70th anniversary, is
one of the most followed brands. All eyes were on creative director
Maria Grazia Chiuri, particularly so after her first bold show a year
ago, where she rooted for feminism with T-shirts exhorting, ‘We
Should All Be Feminists’. She kept up the tempo this time too. On
every seat at the grand setting at the Musée Rodin – Paris, was
placed a copy of the essay titled“Why Have There Been No Great
Women Artists?” published by feminist art historian Linda Nochlin
in 1971. And she opened the show too with a striped T-shirt with
the same words printed in the front. For those wondering, why T-
shirts from a luxury brand known for elegance, she countered with
‘Why not T-shirts?’ in an interview to another publication, “but
luxury can also be a T-shirt, when it is made with expertise and the
best cut.” In her debut collection Chiuri’s T-Shirts with slogans flew
off the racks and did brisk business. This time, Chiuri sought
inspiration from the French artist Niki de Saint Phalle and her
works. The expanse of the venue reflected the look of the
fourteen-acre Tarot Garden, a sculpture park built by her in
Grosseto Province of Tuscany, Italy. We bring select looks from the
show.

4. 21 Future Power Houses –Emerging Designers at LFW
The race to keep churning out new design ideas, season after season, can take
its toll on originality and creativity, with even some of the old established
‘masters’ showing feet of clay, along with same-ole- jaded-stuff on the ramp.
At the recent Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015, the hope for Indian
fashion was kept alive by the 21 young talented lot who showed at the Jabong
stage shows. They made an impact with their very innovative collections, fabrics
and styles. I have divided their collections into four exciting categories to suit
every fashionable requirement.
Called “Urban Islands” Anjali Patel Mehta’s ‘Verandah’ label had fun and flirty
silhouettes with a touch of the 70’s The silhouettes switched from a casual array
of geometric-floral printed shorts, teamed with a full length denim jacket with
metallic quilt detailing; playful jumpsuit, powder blue printed dress, a sheer
kaftan thrown over a mint bikini and a bodycon dress with a side printed panel.
Sahil Aneja’s men’s collection aptly titled ‘Wanderlust’ Inspired by the colourful
and bold art district in Miami had fun, versatile pieces such as shorts, shirts, T-
shirts, suits, jackets, shirts and coats. Eye-catching tones of blue, orange, white,
grey and black were a representation of the turning of the season.
Anuj Bhutani’s label “Reboot” showed traditional Indian textiles in shades of
red, black, blue, nude, peach and olive green for men and women, which
consisted of skirts, dresses, jumpsuits, rompers, tops, shorts, coats, jackets and
shirts.

5. On 13th July, 2014, the beautiful Salon Ritz ballroom at the historic St Regis Grand Hotel in
Rome was once again alive with beautiful women dressed in the height of fashion, when tall
and lithe models gracefully slid across the huge hall in rustling silks and chiffons as part of the
Haute Couture show by World of Fashion. The one day event, held with the ALTA ROMA, takes
place twice a year in January and July. For centuries Italy has been hailed the fashion capital of
the world, and not without reason. To this day, thefashion weeks in Milan and Rome set the
trends for the rest of Europe and the world in general. The high-on-glamour World of Fashion
event is only about haute couture, where accomplished designers from across the globe vie to
participate as it offers an International platform that gives them global exposure and visibility.
Additionally, the event sees a large turnout of celebrities and royalty, who come to shop for
the latest and the most glam outfit for that special Red Carpet moment. The World of Fashion
event was launched in 2008 as platform to create a dialogue between cultures. The intent was
to blend the eastern world with west through the language of fashion and arts, where they
could showcase the history and mutual traditions of their regions in the backdrop of beautiful
apparel. With Nino Graziano Luca at the helm in his capacity as Director, and Habib Mestiri as
consultant, theWorld of Fashion has held 14 chapters successfully, bringing together designers
from several countries. The young designers participating in the event have presented their
collections to the recitations of the poetry of Ibn Hamdis, a 11th Century Sicilian-Arab poet, of
other litterateurs as Khalil Gibran, Ali Ballanubi, contemporary authors such as Fatima
Mernissi, contemporary dancers Maria Strova and Julia Haussner; art works of the Lebanese
artists Nijad Abdul Massih and Mohamed Ali Albadri Aboamira who just fled from the war in
Libya, and four extraordinary artists Giusy D’Arrigo, Renato Meneghetti, Silvio Formichetti
and Thomas Hodges.
