I have always been passionate about math and physics, and in high school, I excelled in both. As
I approached university, I was faced with a dilemma: should I pursue engineering or science? It
was a single, seemingly trivial incident that led to a moment of clarity and solidified my
decision: it started with fiddling with a pen in class. I took it apart, examining the mechanisms
and playing around with all the little parts. As I sat there with a deconstructed pen strewed across
my desk, something occurred to me: if a person uses a pen to write, he's made for the arts; if a
person throws it in the air and watches gravity pull it back, she's made for science; and if someone
takes a pen apart to see how it works – piecing together the relationship of the spring to the push
mechanism, inspecting the efficiency of the inkwell – he's made for engineering. I realized that I had
always loved disassembling objects and, more often than not, putting them back together – fascinated
with how things work and what I could do to make them work better. This led me to a degree in
engineering, which has become my passion....show more content...

I currently hold a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Engineering Technology from Prairie View

was young and on my own for the first time and I lived life as a young person. Prior to attending
Prairie View A&M University, I was dedicated on receiving excellent grades in school, because of
my hard work I graduated from high school number three in my class. In college, I made mistakes
and learned from those mistakes. I was so elated to be the first person in my family to graduate
from college. My interest in teaching led me to complete a teacher's deficiency plan from Texas
Southern University. At Texas Southern University, my GPA is 3.88 which is a true reflection of

4. Pursuing A Graduate Degree Essay
Pursuing a graduate degree, specifically a PhD, is a decision that was made only in the last few
years. This new direction was largely based on my recent exposure to higher education in general,
but to minority women in higher education specifically. To help explain how this exposure helped
to propel my desire to pursue a graduate degree at this point in my life, I feel it's important to
provide you with some background information and context of my upbringing. My parents are
immigrated from Mexico shortly after getting married. Although my father had been coming to
the United States since he was a teen to work, he did this seasonally and would return to Mexico
when the agricultural season ended. After my parents married they settled in a small agricultural
town in a coastal town of California. It is in this small town that my parents raised their 6 children.
Holding on to their traditional values we were raised in a traditional manner; from a young age the
girls were expected to help out in the house and contribute by doing housework while the boys were
expected to help my father which included helping out in the fields. It was in this way that my
parents tried to instill many of the same values which they had acquired in their youth growing up in
Mexico. Although they wanted us to do well in school it wasn't something that was strongly
emphasized. Perhaps it was due to their limited exposure to education and the lack of educational
opportunities my parent's had growing up.

I came to the United States last year and it has been an extremely rewarding experience. I have
truly enjoyed working and living in a multicultural environment. In my professional life, I have
taken on greater challenges and led a team in the expansion of a new business. I also joined the
Toastmasters where I honed my English communication skills and made new friends. My greatest
delight is that I found my life's passion.
This began when I took a journey to my hometown last November where I encountered my
strongest school competitor after 12 years. She, unfortunately, had dropped out at 15 to get married
and had a daughter with a heart condition, which subjected her to domestic violence and economic
pressure. I empathized with her because of my personal experiences. My father was abusive and
forced me to quit school at 14. However, my determination got me admitted into a senior high school
in Shanghai. This was the beginning of a phenomenal journey. Currently, I work at a Global 500
Company and are testimony that girls can make a difference. I am also the pride of the family
notwithstanding the perception in my hometown that girls are inferior to boys.
Consequently, I purposed to help women who are deprived of a basic education and the resources

All I have ever wanted was the chance to see my dreams come true. Palms sweaty, throat tight, and
a sense of accomplishment radiating from my bones, the moment I walked off the stage at my
middle school graduation, I knew that that was the beginning of the rest of my life. In high school,
the most important goal for me was going to college and pursuing my dream of becoming an artist,
then taking that success and finding a way to give back to the community and people that raised
me. The Bonner Scholar Program will help me acquire the funds to achieve my goal in the long

I was never discouraged from wanting to become an artist, my mom would buy me all types of
paints and coloring pencils, the amount of paper we owned could fill up the entire apartment. When
I was small it was just a hobby, but by the time I entered middle school I realized that if I shoved my
heart and soul into getting better at my technique then I could become someone worth talking about.
However, when I entered high school I realized that we do not have the kind of financial stability
that it takes for me to acquire the learning that I desire. If I cannot work through college and
cannot afford my books then I know that all I have worked for will go to waste. So as I said, I

The only thing that has ever discouraged me from following my dreams has been the cost, and I
know that I cannot become the best version of myself without help. And so that is why I want to

My whole life I have been invested in doing what I love, focusing on my true passions, as well as
finding new ones. I have been very involved in my high school, and have been lucky enough to be
