The Indian government demonetized the 500 and 1000 rupee banknotes on 8 November 2016 in order to curb corruption and counterfeiting. People were given time to deposit the old banknotes in banks and post offices. The move led to cash shortages and long lines at banks but was aimed at targeting unaccounted money, fake currency, and terrorism financing.
