Urinary catheterisation is a procedure used to drain the bladder and collect urine, through a flexible tube called a catheter. Urinary catheters are usually inserted by doctors or nurses in hospital or the community.

Explain procedure to the patient
Close door or draw curtain or screen the
patient
Wash hand with soap water and put on clean
sterile gloveo
Place a mackintosh with paper or towel under
the patient buttocks
25. Position the patient:-
-male:-Supine position
-Female:-Supine position with knee flexed
Drape the patient with a bath blanket covering
both legs , legs,leaving genitalia exposed
26. Wash the perineal area with warm
soapy swabs, plain water soap
Wait for the dry the genital
Remove gloves and wash hands
Put on sterile gloves
27. Open the sterile catheterization using
sterile technique
Cleanes the perineal area
28. Female:-
Spred labias with finger and thumb, cleanes
area from clitoris down to anus using one swab at a time
Male:-
With a gloved hand ,pick up a cotton ball with forceps
and clean the penis in a circular motion from urethral meatus
29. Pick-up the catheter with a gloved hand 3- 4
inches from the catheter tip
Lubricate tip of the catheter with a sterile
lubricant
Inserting catheter in female 2-4 inch and
in male 7-9 inch
30. Collect the urine specimen if required
,attach the drainage tubing if an
indwelling catheter is put in
Inflate balloon with the required amount
of normal saline
Secure catheter tubing to the inner thigh
with nonallergic tape
34. At the end of the procedure
Wash and dry the perineum to remove
any urine left on the skin
Provide comfortable position
Replace the articles
