Microsoft word human earth call for artists- welcome pack-1
1. HUMANEARTH CALL FOR ARTIST’S
WASTELAND |
NOUN
AN UNUSED AREA OF LAND THAT HAS BECOME BARREN OR OVERGROWN.
A BLEAK, UNATTRACTIVE, AND UNUSED OR NEGLECTED URBAN OR
INDUSTRIAL AREA.
(Oxford Dictionary, 2012)
The terms used to ‘define’ wasteland above are incredibly obsolete and don’t appear to leave any
room for negotiation. ‘Unused’ suggests inactivity but does not explain which activities have been
discontinued. By accessing your own associations and understandings of ‘Wasteland’ you are
invited to explore your local ‘wasteland,’ to produce site specific artwork that function as interventions.
IN AN ATTEMPT TO EXPLORE (BUT NOT
DEFINE) THE TERM, ‘WASTELAND’,
HUMANEARTH INVITES YOU TO EXPLORE
YOUR LOCAL ‘WASTELAND.’ AND TO
DOCUMENT YOUR EXPLORATION UTILISING
ANY MEDIUM YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE
WITH.
FEEL FREE TO PLAY,
INVENT SITE SPECIFIC
GAMES…. CREATIVITY,
AFTER ALL, IS
DEPENDENT ON
PLAY***
2. Please prepare a basic artists proposal to be considered for this project. Your proposal could but does not have to allow for multiple participants. It should also
include a plan that alludes to the following examples:
• Encourage participation with passers through or visitors to the site, by inviting them to play a form of onsite game.
• Standard documentation of your chosen wasteland,
i.e. 360° photographic documentation of the site,
written documentation or description. This
documentation can take place in one day, over night
or as a continued activity.
• The documentation of the
surrounding area that
contextualizes the wasteland as
such. Creating a comparative
description.
• Discover and collect objects scattered in the (waste)
landscape and insert these objects into another
context; evolving meaning and understanding.
• Sonic documentation of the landscape to create an
audio portrait, e.g. interviewing the wasteland’s
current occupants, past inhabitants and/or future
inhabitants (non- or human).
• Creating myth(s) or rumour(s) about the wasteland, distributing it, and documenting the
results and reactions.
