2. 2. DISCLAIMER AND NOTICES The information and recommendations outlined in this presentation are not intended as a substitute for personalized medical advice. The presentation proposes certain theoretical methods of nutrition, not necessarily mainstream. It is left to the discretion, and it is the sole responsibility of the user of the information indicated in the presentation, to determine if procedures and recommendations described are appropriate for a patient. Neither the authors nor the sponsors (such as Apex Energetics) of this information can be held responsible for the information or any inadvertent errors or omissions of the information. The information in this presentation should not be construed as a claim or representation that any procedure or product mentioned constitutes a specific cure, palliative or ameliorative. Procedures and products described should be considered as adjunctive to other accepted conventional procedures deemed necessary by the attending licensed doctor. It is the concern of the Department of Health and Human Services that no homeopathic and nutritional supplements be used to replace established, conventional medical approaches, especially in cases of emergencies, serious or life threatening diseases or conditions. We share in this concern, as replacing conventional treatment with such remedies, especially in serious cases, may deprive the patient of necessary treatment and thereby cause harm as well as potentially pose a major legal liability for the health professional involved. Apex formulas should not be used as replacements for conventional medical treatment.

 5. 5. Exposure: We Live in a World of Toxins
 6. 6. What Are Toxins? A toxin is any substance that creates irritating and/or harmful effects on the body, undermining our health, or stressing our biological and biochemical functions.
 7. 7. Toxins Are All Around Us… Environmental Toxins: Many of the toxins abundant today did not even exist 30 years ago!
 8. 8. What Contributes to Our Toxic Burden? We are all exposed to thousands of toxins and chemicals on a daily basis at work, in the home, through the air we breathe, our food and water supply, and through the use of pharmaceutical drugs.
 9. 9. Where Toxins Come From…

External Toxins

Heavy Metals

Amalgams

Alcohol

Damaged fats/foods

Drugs (Rx & OTC)

Smoke

Agriculture treatments

Environmental pollutants

Petrochemicals

Solvents, and industrial chemicals

Food additives

 10. 10. What Else Contributes to Our Toxic Burden? Internal exposure: Metabolic wastes are created every day in our bodies from the production of energy and the metabolism of hormones from exercise, as well as the breakdown and clearing of toxins.
 11. 11. How Does Toxicity Occur?

Multiple small exposures to toxins

One large exposure

Exposure to a potent toxin such as mercury

 12. 12. How Does Toxicity Occur?

When the body is overloaded with toxins that it is unable to effectively break down and eliminate

When our vitality is low and metabolism is slow

 13. 13. Total Toxic Exposures

External/Environmental toxins

+ Internal/Metabolic waste

Total Toxic Load

 14. 14. Reality Check

In 33 years, the EPA has tested for safety only 200 and banned only five of the more than 80,000 chemicals in commerce.

Charlotte Brody, RN, National Field Director for Safe Chemicals, Healthy Families at

 15. 15. The Measure of Toxicity

Symptoms Survey- toxicity profile

Blood Test

Toxic Urine Elements

Genetic Test for ‘Poor Detoxifiers”

Body Composition Analysis

 16. 16. The Fourth Annual Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals

The CDC 2009, report provides an ongoing assessment of the exposure of the U.S. population to environmental chemicals.

The chemicals were measured in blood, serum, and urine from random samples of 2500 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Fourth Annual Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, 2009, at

 17. 17. CDC Report on Industrial Chemicals

Findings in the Fourth Report indicate widespread exposure to some commonly used industrial chemicals:

Fire retardants that accumulate in the environment and in human fat tissue were found in the serum of all of the NHANES participants.

BPA (from plastic) was found in 90% of the urine samples of the participants.

PFOA —contained non-stick coatings in cookware—was found in most participants.

Lead in children is still a concern.

 18. 18. CDC Position on Chemical Exposure

“ The presence of an environmental chemical in people’s blood or urine does not mean that it will cause effects or disease. The toxicity of a chemical is related to its dose or concentration, in addition to a person’s individual susceptibility . Small amounts may be of no consequence, whereas larger amounts may cause adverse health effects.”

Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, 2009 at

 19. 19. Effects of Toxins
 20. 20. Toxins in Newborns

In 2005, Environmental Working Group undertook a study to determine the amount of toxins in “cord blood.” The investigators analyzed the chemicals in 10 samples donated to the American Red Cross and taken from hospitals around the U.S. They found 287 chemicals, including two chemicals that were banned in the 1970’s. Many are known carcinogens, brain irritants, and 208 are known to cause birth defects:

Mercury

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs): polytetrafluoroethylene, food wrappings, fabric protectants

Polybrominated dibenzodioxins: flame retardants, plastics

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): gasoline

Organochlorine pesticides: DDT (banned in 1972)

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): computers, television sets

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): plastics

Houlihan et al “Body Burden: The Pollution in Newborns,” July 14, 2005, Environmental Working Group

 21. 21. Breast Cancer Begins in Utero

Trichopolous, D., “Hypothesis: Does Breast Cancer Originate in Utero? Lancet, 1990, 335:939-940.

E. Ekbom, Trichopolous, D., “Evidence of Prenatal Influences on Breast Cancer Risk,” Lancet, October 24, 1992, 340(8826):1015-8.

Dr. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, an epidemiologist from the Harvard School of Public Health, conducted an analysis of breast cancer cases over three generations over a 70-year span in Sweden. He concluded that, “exposure to excess estrogen or estrogenic chemicals in the womb may program fetal breast cells, permanently imprinting the developing cells with traits that they would not otherwise have had.” The researchers concluded that prenatal factors are important in breast carcinogenesis.
 22. 22. Study on Toxicity in Five Environmental Justice Leaders Jacob, A., The Chemical Body Burden of Environmental Justice Leaders, May 2009, Environmental Working Group at http://ewg.rg/report/Pollution-in-5-Extraodinary-Women Scientists recently studied five female environmentalists from across the United States. The study was sponsored by EWG in conjunction with Rachel’s Network, and the testing was targeted toward compounds that are heavily used in everyday consumer products. Labs in different parts of the world performed tests on blood samples taken from these women and found traces of at least 48 different chemicals– most notably fire retardants, synthetic fragrances, rocket fuel perchlorate and Bisphenol A , which is found in contaminated drinking water. Mercury, lead and polytetrafluoroethylene were also found. Since all of these women were trying to live a less toxic lifestyle, they were surprised to find such high levels of chemicals in their bodies.
 23. 23. Americans Carry the Burden of a Toxic Sunscreen Chemical Hanson, K., Gratton, E. Bardeen, CJ., 2006, Sunscreen enhancement of UV-induced reactive oxygen species in the skin, Free Radical Biology & Medicine, 41(8):1205-1212. A new study by the CDC reveals that 97% of Americans (NHANES) are contaminated with a widely used sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage . Oxybenzone is a “penetration enhancer” in that it helps other chemicals penetrate the skin.
 24. 24. Oxybenzone Penetrates the Skin Sutton, R. CDC: Americans Carry Body Burden of Toxic Sunscreen Chemical, March 2008 at http://www.ewglorg/analysis/toxicsunscreen The EWG research shows that 84% of 910 brands of sunscreen products contain oxybenzone.
 25. 25. Popular Insect Repellent is Neurotoxic

Corbel, V, Evidence for inhibition of cholinesterases in insect and mammalian nervous systems by the insect repellent DEET, BMC Biology, August, 5, 2009 at

A research study has shown that “DEET” actually functions like the deadly nerve gas , Sarin, and in a similar manner to organophosates by attacking the nervous systems of both insects and mammals. The researchers found that “DEET” is not simply a behavior-modifying chemical but also inhibits the activity of a key central nervous system enzyme, acetylcholinesterase….” Nerve gases and organophosphates irreversibly inhibit acetylcholinesterase, leading to salivation and eye watering at lower doses, and muscle spasms or death at higher doses. The lead scientist at Duke University states that insect repellents should carry warning labels.
 26. 26. Symptoms of Toxicity

Headaches

Joint pains

Cough/Wheezing

Sore throat

Tight or stiff neck

High blood fats

Backaches

Itchy nose

Frequent colds

Irritated eyes

Environmental sensitivity

Constipation

Weight gain

Runny nose

Nervousness

Sleepiness/Insomnia

Dizziness

Mood changes

Anxiety/Depression

Fatigue

Skin rashes

Nausea

Indigestion

Bad breath

Immune weakness

Allergies

These symptoms may be related to other factors as well.
