22. Study on Toxicity in Five Environmental Justice Leaders Jacob, A., et.al. The Chemical Body Burden of Environmental Justice Leaders, May 2009, Environmental Working Group at http://ewg.rg/report/Pollution-in-5-Extraodinary-Women Scientists recently studied five female environmentalists from across the United States. The study was sponsored by EWG in conjunction with Rachel’s Network, and the testing was targeted toward compounds that are heavily used in everyday consumer products. Labs in different parts of the world performed tests on blood samples taken from these women and found traces of at least 48 different chemicals– most notably fire retardants, synthetic fragrances, rocket fuel perchlorate and Bisphenol A , which is found in contaminated drinking water. Mercury, lead and polytetrafluoroethylene were also found. Since all of these women were trying to live a less toxic lifestyle, they were surprised to find such high levels of chemicals in their bodies.

A new study by the CDC reveals that 97% of Americans (NHANES) are contaminated with a widely used sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage . Oxybenzone is a “penetration enhancer” in that it helps other chemicals penetrate the skin.
