2. Static electricity - an electric charge that
builds up on a material
Electric charge – units of electricity
•Positive charges
•Negative charges
Charges that are the same are like charges.
Charges that are different are unlike charges.
3. Most matter is electrically neutral- they have an equal number of positive and
negative charges.
A charge happens when the positive and negatives are out of balance.
4. How Charges Behave
• Two objects with the LIKE charges REPEL each
other
•Two objects with UNLIKE charges ATTRACT
each other

5. How Charges Behave
•Particles that have a NEGATIVE charge move
more easily from one material to another
than particles with a positive charge.
6. Static Electricity –
sometimes a charge builds
up on a material. The built
up charge is called static
electricity.
When you comb your hair with a comb- negative particles
move from your hair to the comb– The comb has a
NEGATIVE charge.
Your hair has a POSITIVE charge.
The negative and positive charges attract each other.
7. A Bolt of Lightening is an Electric Discharge
Friction between raindrops and ice create electric charges that build up and
separate. The ground and objects become positively charged. – The charge builds
and it is finally released as lightening!
