Valery Hodemchuk was the first person to die from the Chernobyl explosion in 1986. Valery Perevozchenko fulfilled his responsibilities as head of the reactor department on the night of the explosion and died in June 1986. Anatoly Baranov prevented an explosion and fire in the engine room but died in May 1986. Anatoly Sitnikov, an experienced physicist, was sent to help with the liquidation efforts after the accident on the fourth power block and died in May 1986.
