2. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Its
intensive beauty with unique reverence is still outstanding to both tourists and local
villagers, even in a country whose horizon is overflowed by the Himalayan range.
This trek is one of the most popular trekking holiday routes in Nepal, giving an
unforgettable experience to numerous trekkers all around the world.
The ABC Trek takes place in a truly exceptional land rich in history, culture and
breathtaking beauty. The Annapurna Sanctuary is a fortress-like basin surrounded by the
Annapurna range, a series of Himalayan peaks rising over 7,000meters above sea level. Seen
as a sacred land for centuries, the Annapurna Sanctuary is believed as a home for high
deities of Hinduism, Buddhism and more ancient shamanistic traditions; hence it has been a
forbidden land until recent years.
During your trek
During the trek you follow a traditional footpath through a narrow and deep gorge carved by
the river Modi Kola. For centuries Tibetan traders used this footpath as a trading route. Even
nowadays, it’s likely to pass donkey teams carrying loads on the path.
Furthermore this trekking route leads you along terraced rice fields, remote villages where
after you enter the ice-bound heart of the mountainous amphitheater and reach the high point
of Annapurna Base Camp at (4,190m/3,418ft). Then you will trek all the way down to
Pokhara (910m/2,986ft).
