Many food choices that are very prominent in our culture may have surprisingly negative consequences on the health of our mouths. However, eating better foods does not have to be boring. We have some recommendations to eat well and limit exposure to those less nutritious and possibly harmful foods.

Making Healthy Choices For Our
Teeth
Many food choices that are very prominent in our
culture may have surprisingly negative
consequences on the health of our mouths
There are multiple kinds of foods that effect teeth
and cause possible tooth decay with consistent
exposure, including:
•Carbohydrates
•Sugary Foods (cake, cookies, candy)
•Starches (potato chips and pretzels)

POSITIVE FOODS
• Fruits and vegetables carry a high volume of
water, especially celery, cucumbers and
pears
• Bananas and raisins
• Cheese is a great choice because of the
variety of flavors and pairings you can make
with it for snacks. Additionally, it also triggers
salivary flow.
• Saliva also contains protective enzymes that
fight tooth decay and can offset the effect of
acid that causes cavities.

WATCH OUT FOR THESE FOODS!
• Sticky (chewy) foods, such as granola bars,
raisins, oatmeal and peanut butter (and
candies of course)
• If you are going to give a child sugary treats,
do it right after or alongside a meal because
saliva is more abundant and will help offset
sugar intake
• Buy sugar-free or unsweetened foods
• Never give a baby a bottle when he or she
goes to bed
• Drink water instead of soda and juice as
much as is reasonable

LET US HELP!
Following these steps can offset the tendency
for potentially poor or insufficient tooth and
gum care habits common to children’s dental
care and can get them on the right track
toward overall health. Many of the healthier
foods can be very fun to eat.
The idea is to build the habit of making
healthy food choices early and often while
hoping to limit the exposure to the bad foods
only on special occasions.
