COMMON NAMES OF PIGS
Pigs are classified into three types as follow:
1: Pork
2: Bacon
3: Lard producer
The common names of pigs are as follow:
BOAR
An entire adult male pig
SOW
An adult female pig used for breeding.
STAG
A castrated male pig normally castrated after it has matured.
GILT
A young female pig to be kept for breeding.
STORE PIGS
Pigs between weaning and fatling 8-15 weeks old.
RUNT
The smallest piglet of the litter usually the last to be farrowed such as pigs are small
because they occupied the extremely tip of the urine horns during pregnancy.
PTSIGLE
These are young pigs under six month’s age.
LITTER
This is a group of piglets farrowed by the same sow at the same time.
FARROWING
The process of giving birth as applied to pig.
