1. To find out the effect of COVID-19 on the academic performance of
students in Senior Secondary Schools of Mbarara city.
2. To find out the relationship between academic performance of secondary
school students, before and after COVID 19 in Mbarara city.
3. To establish the impact of COVID 19 on the academic level attainment of
secondary school students.
3. Research question of the study
1. What is the effect of COVID-19 on the academic performance of students
in Senior Secondary Schools of Mbarara city.
2. What is the relationship between academic performance of secondary
school students, before and after COVID 19 in Mbarara city.
3. What is the impact of COVID 19 on the academic level attainment of
secondary school students.
4. Methodology
• The study was carried out in Kakoba Division-Mbarara City
South, Mbarara city- western Uganda. A case study research
design was used where both quantitative and qualitative
methods of data collection and analysis was applied. The
study population comprised of Head teachers, teachers and
students. A sample of 25 respondents was selected using
simple random sampling technique and headteachers were
purposively chosen. Questionnaire method was used to
collect data from students while interviews were used to
collect data from teachers and head teachers. Quantitative
data was analyzed using SPSS version 26 and presented using
tables, frequencies and percentages. Qualitative data was
analyzed using coding themes.
5. Findings and interpretation
• The study found out that all respondents were aware of COVID 19
pandemic and it affected their life in general where COVID 19 affected
social, cultural and economic life of respondents. The study also found
out that COVID 19 affected the academic life of respondents where all
schools were closed.
• Findings of the study indicated that all respondents were aware about
COVID 19 and they majority n=23(92%) agreed that they were all
affected COVID 19 in general
• The study found out that majority n=23 (92%) academic life was affected
and also n=20 (80%), COVID 19 affected their academic life. The
findings of the study show that COVID 19 affected academic life of all
respondents as well as their academic performance. This was due to that
schools were locked down, co-curricular activities were stopped.

• The study found out that 15(60%) rated their academic performance as good
before COVID 19.
• The study also found out that 10(40%) rated their academic performance
after COVID 19 pandemic as fair
• Study findings showed that more than a half of respondents’ n=13(52%)
academic life was good before COVID 19 pandemic.
• Findings showed that COVID 19 changed negatively academic life of
14(56%.
• Findings of the study showed that more than a half n=14(56%) of
respondents liked their present academic life compared to the previous.
• The findings show that all the respondents wanted to go on with studies
even after COVID 19 pandemic
• The findings indicated 13(52%) wanted to study up to University after their
current level of education
7. Conclusion
• The study concluded that all respondents were aware of COVID 19 pandemic
and it affected their life in general where COVID 19 affected social, cultural
and economic life of respondents.
• The study also concluded that COVID 19 affected the academic life of
respondents where all schools were closed.
• The study concluded that the academic performance of respondents was good
before COVID 19 but after the breakdown of COVID 19, the academic
performance of respondents after COVID 19 pandemic was neither fair nor
good.
• The study also concluded that respondents did like their present academic life
compared to the previous, despite closure of schools, restricted of movement
by respondents, reduced socialization, stopped co-curricular activities, the
classes went on Televisions, Radios and newspapers, and open classes were
stopped.
• The study also concluded that respondents wanted to go with studies even after
COVID 19 pandemic.

•The national lockdown of educational institutions in
Mbarara city and across Uganda caused a major
interruption in students learning; disruptions in an
academic program, suspension of terminal
examination, cancellation of internal and external
examination, creating a gap in teaching and learning
and probably caused manpower shortage in the
institutions as a result of a death caused by COVID-
19
