OTC medication

2. Esomeprazole : Nexium® : PPIs
 Capsule 20 mg (OTC) for 14 days .



3. Fexofenadine : allegra® : Telfast® : antihistamine ( 2nd generation )
 Indication : Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis/Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
 Side effect : vomiting , headache ,cough , dizziness and back pain.

4. Levonorgestrel oral : i-pill® : emergency contraceptive
 Only OTC for women more than 17 years .
 1 tablet PO as soon as possible within 72 hr of unprotected coitus, THEN
1 tablet PO 12 hr later
Indication : contraception
Side effect : Headache, Acne, Ovarian cysts, Enlarged follicles, Amenorrhea,
Abdominal pain , Uterine/vaginal bleeding alterations , Intermenstrual
bleeding/spotting , Vulvovaginitis, Ectopic pregnancy , Breast tenderness .

5. Doxylamine : unisom® :antihistamines
Indication : insomnia
Side effect : dry mouth, nose, and throat , drowsiness ,nausea , increased
chest congestion , headache , excitement , nervousness , vision problems,
difficulty urinating

6. Cyclizine : Marezine® : antihistamines
indication : motion sicknes
side effect : Drowsiness ,
Xerostomia .

7. Phenylephrine nasal: neoSynephrine® : decongestant
Indication : nasal congestion
Side effect : Stinging ,Dryness , Rebound
congestion , Sneezing , Burning .
Counseling : Cautions : Rebound congestion
may occur . Use caution in DM and
hypertension .
• Importance of advising patients not to exceed
the recommended dosage unless otherwise
directed by a clinician.
• informing patient to consult a clinician before
using for self-medication of nasal congestion if
they have been diagnosed with thyroid disease,
diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease,
or difficulty urinating because of prostatic
hypertrophy.
• discontinuing self-medication of nasal
congestion and consulting a clinician if
symptoms persist >7 days or are accompanied
by fever or if nervousness, dizziness, or
insomnia develops during therapy.

8. Hydrocortisone topical : locoid® : corticosteroid
Only OTC for ≥ 18 years .
Indication : Corticosteroid-responsive Dermatoses , Relief of
inflammatory and pruritic manifestations
Side effect : drying or cracking of the skin , acne , itching ,
burning , change in skin color , skin atrophy.

9. Lidocaine topical : Xylocaine® ( xylogel® ) : local anesthetic
 Indication : hemorrhoid , burn , tooth pain .
 Side effect : cardiovascular depression (high
absorption ) ,hypotention , urticaria and edema .
• Advise patients to avoid inadvertent
trauma to the lips, tongue, cheek
mucosae, or soft palate when these
structures are anesthetized for dental
procedures; postpone ingestion of food
until normal function returns. Advise
patient to consult dentist if anesthesia
persists or if rash develops.

11. docusate sodium topical : DEWAX® : ear drop
indication : removal of the impacted ear
wax .
side effect : dryness .

12. Chlorpheneramine malate : Chlorphen-12® : antihistamine
 Indication : Perennial & seasonal allergic Rhinitis & vasomotor
rhinitis, relief of symptoms from colds, urticaria, angioedema,
anaphylactic reactions, pruritus, allergic conjunctivitis .
Side effect : drowsiness ,dry mouth, nose, and throat , nausea,
vomiting, loss of appetite , constipation , headache , vision
problems , difficulty urinating
