2. INTRODUCTION
What is Road ?
Roads are defined as the routes or paths that
begin at one destinations and leads to
another.
• DEVELOPMENT OF A COUNTRY DEPENDS ON THE CONNECTIVITY OF
VARIOUS PLACES WITH ADEQUATE ROAD NETWORK.
• ROAD CONSTITUTE THE MOST IMPORTANT MODE OF COMMUNICATION IN
ALL AREA OF POWER PLANT.
3. TYPES OF PAVEMENT
• FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
• RIGID PAVEMENT
TWO TYPES OF PAVEMENTS ARE LAID IN INDIA
4. FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
Flexible pavement can be defined as a pavement layer comprising of
a mixture of aggregates and bitumen, heated and mixed properly and
then laid and compacted on a bed of granular layer.
RIGID PAVEMENT
Rigid pavements on the other hand, are made from cement
concrete or reinforced concrete slabs, laid over a low strength
concrete layer (Dry lean concrete, DLC)/PCC on a well compacted
layer of aggregates or both.
5. HOW CAN WE DECIDE WHICH PAVEMENT IS SUITABLE BETWEEN
A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT AND A RIGID PAVEMENT :
• FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT ARE PREFERRED IF:
1. Location is good enough to drain off water quickly to the berms and
there are no chances of pavement being submerged under water
any time.
2. Economical cost is also a consideration.(Low initial cost)
• RIGID PAVEMENT ARE PREFERRED IF:
1. Location is not good enough to drain off water, Not effected due to
weather conditions.
2. Long service life is preferred.
6. CROSS SECTION OF RIGID PAVEMENT
• CONCRETE PAVEMENT
• BASE COURSE
• SUB-BASE COURSE
• SOIL SUB-GRADE
16. ACCORDING TO MORTH
(SECTION 400)
• Rolling shall be continued till the
density achieved is at lease 98 per
cent of the maximum dry density
for the material determined as per
IS:2720 (Part 8).
20. 3. Preparation of Base Course in
Rigid pavement : Dry Lean
Concrete(DLC)/PCC
A separation membrane shall
be used between the base
Course (PCC) and the base
(GSB). Separation membrane
shall be impermeable P.E sheet
125 micron thick transparent
21. Laying of Dry Lean Concrete (DLC)/PCC
Although the actual thickness will be governed by the design
considerations, a thickness of minimum 150 mm is recommended for all
major projects of State Highways and National Highways. When DLC is
adopted as the base in case of roads other than the above roads its
thickness of 100 mm is recommended. (IRC:SP:49-2014)
• But here inside Plant boundary it recommended for 100 mm thick
Lean concrete with M15 Grade
22. PCC laying is going on over 125 micron P.E sheet on well compacted GSB layer.
24. Rigid pavement
/ RCC Road
• Minimum thickness of 150 mm is
considered desirable (IRC-150)
• Inside plant thickness of 250mm
is recommended of M30 Garde
Concrete.
