2. Our Goal
Our goal at the Writing Center is to help students
become better writers.
In addition to assisting with the individual paper, we
try to focus on the writing process as a whole.
To that end, we provide suggestions for improvement
rather than detailed edits.
3. Things to keep in mind
We assist with all aspects of the writing process from
brainstorming and outlining to grammar and format.
We assist with writing projects from all subjects and
even personal projects.
4. How our sessions work
We focus on the broader concerns first, such as the
topic and organization of the essay.
Next, we focus on how the main points and
arguments are structured in the paragraphs.
After addressing those issues, we focus on grammar,
citations, and other smaller issues.
5. What to expect when you come in
When you come in, you will be greeted by our front
desk staff and assisted with signing in.
After signing in, you will be directed to work with a
tutor.
As the session ends, our tutors typically leave
students with a list of improvements they can make
on their own and give the students a sheet to serve
as a notification for their instructor.
6. What to expect when you submit online
Students are able to email their papers to the
Writing Center email.
A tutor will reply within two business days.
Included in the reply will be a copy of the paper with
comments attached and a form with more general
notes which can be forwarded to the instructor as
notification of your visit.
7. Tips for using the Writing Center effectively
Allow yourself plenty of time for a visit. Most in-
person sessions last between thirty and forty-five
minutes and most online submissions will take at least
one business day.
Save any comments made on your paper to make
revisions easier later.
Include an assignment sheet to give us a better idea of
what your instructor is looking for.
