• My sister sells everything online

4. PASSIVE SENTENCES

5. VERBS WITH 2 PASSIVES
• The judge gave him two weeks to pay the fine
• She bought me a wonderful present

• He was given two weeks to pay the fine / Two weeks
were given to him to pay the fine
• I was bought a wonderful present/ A wonderful

7. RULES: From active to passive
• Passive sentences are very frequent in English
• Action is more important than subject (irrelevant,
unimportant)
• SUBJECT + TO BE (in the same active tense) + PAST
PARTICIPLE OF THE MAIN VERB
• DIRECT OBJECT (ACTIVE) = subject (passive)
• Two objects = two subject passives (preferable the indirect
one (person)
• Special verbs: say, think, believe, know, report... (opinion,
thought, belief)

• Modal verbs = passive verb after both
• Active subject = by- phrase (optional)
