SALAR DE UYUNI
Once, a donkey called Gopu lived in the hills. One day,
Gopu was happily munching on the grass of the lush
green meadow. Gopu was so engrossed in eating the
green patch of grass that he did not notice anything
in his surroundings. Suddenly while eating, he lifted
his head and was shocked to see Shikari right in front
of him. Shikari was a wolf. Gopu realized that he
needed to quickly think of an idea or else the wolf
would devour him.
At once, Gopu started making sounds, “Oohhh,
ahhh, it’s hurting so bad!” Unable to understand
anything, Shikari asked him what was wrong. Gopu
began to limp and said,“A sharp thorn has pierced
through my foot while I was walking on the bushes,
now I am in terrible pain, will you please remove it
for me?”
“Why do you think I would do that?” asked Shikari,
and thought to himelf how foolish the donkey
must be.“I am waiting to eat him up and he wants
me to remove a thorn from his foot,” thought
Shikari.
“Shikari, it is for your benefit that I am asking you to
take out the thorn,” said Gopu. “What benefit will I
get by helping you?”asked Shikari.
“The thorn is very big and sharp. When you eat me,
it will get stuck in your throat and will hurt you
badly.”
Shikari thought for a moment and then agreed to
do what Gopu said. Gopu lifted his foot for Shikari,
and as soon as Shikari came close to his feet, Gopu
kicked Shikari with all his strength and galloped
away swiftly.
Shikari was blinded by the force of the kick and he
also lost some teeth. “Serves me right. Why did I
even listen to the donkey instead of eating him up
right away? It is so foolish of me,”Shikari thought to
himself, and quietly limped away from there.

Do Animals
Feel Emotions?
Emotions can be defined as a conscious mental reaction which comes
in the form of strong feelings usually felt towards or because of a
particular object. This can cause a variety of changes in the body. To
study emotions better, scientists divide these reactions into three
categories – physiological, psychological and behavioural.
Charles Darwin was the first scientist to suggest that animals had
emotions, much like humans, However, his theories were disregard-
ed until recently. Scientists are now suggesting after extensive
research, that animals do feel a certain range of emotions.
These emotions – such as fear and love influence an animal’s
behaviour and lead them to make decisions. New research shows
that animals can have physiological reactions to emotions
(Example: an increase in heart rate) and behavioural reactions to
emotions (Example: their hair stands up). Conclusive proof is yet
to be discovered that animals can think deeply into their emo-
tions and have psychological reactions.
Research has shown that social animals like dogs can read
human expressions and react when they see facial expres-
sions depicting extreme emotions such as love, fear and
anger. Hence, dogs are a highly common support animal.

Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the
world, it has a measurement of 10,582 km
squared (4,086 miles squared). Salar de
Uyuni is also known as Salar de Tunupa
which can be translated from Spanish as
‘salt flat enclosure’. It is located in Potosí in
southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the
Andes and is at an elevation of 3,656
meters (11,995 ft) above mean sea level.
The Salar was formed as a result of transfor-
mations between several prehistoric lakes.
It is covered by a few meters of salt crust.
The crust serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium.
It contains 50 to 70% of the world’s lithium reserves, which is in the process of being extracted.
Whilst some salt is extracted from Salar de Uyuni, it is estimated that the flat contains 10 billion
tonnes of salt.
Salar de Uyuni has little wildlife, but has 80 species of visiting and migrating birds.
These salt flats are a large tourist attraction for people to come and take photos
because it makes the salt flat also the largest natural mirror.

sir dig-a-lot
China's Han Dynasty
“I want to learn about the Han dynasty in China,” Rohan told his
friend Sir Dig-a-Lot. Sir Dig-a-Lot said, “No problem, Rohan,
I will tell you all about it today.”
“The Han dynasty is called the golden era in the history of China. It lasted for about
400 years. The Han dynasty existed from 206 BC to 9 AD. The dynasty left such a
positive influence that Chinese people call themselves Han after the Han dynasty.”
"An important textile in this era was silk and the biggest products in the Han empire
were salt, iron and copper. An important discovery in this dynasty was the Silk Route.
It is a sea route connecting China and Europe."
“One of the first steps he took, was to
appoint educated people as advisors in the
empire. In order to achieve this, Liu Bang
started educational institutes and schools
with a system of examinations to get cov-
eted jobs in the empire.
The major contribution of this dynasty
was the invention of paper. Other
important discoveries include casting
iron, rotation of crops, and the art of
acupuncture."
“The Han dynasty was established after emperor Qin’s son was overthrown
by a peasant revolt. The name Han dynasty came from the river Han in China.
The first ruler, Liu Bang changed his name to Han Gaozu.”

Natural Immunity Boosters
Nature has many preventives that can nip infec-
tions in the bud, rather than having for you to
suffer later. Here are a few gems from Mother
Nature to help you combat seasonal woes.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and as a
result, is flushed out of the body if unused. As a
result, it is important to replenish this immuni-
ty-boosting vitamin regularly. Though studies
have shown that the consumption of Vitamin C
loaded foods will not prevent you from catch-
ing a cold, it will reduce the cold symptoms and
the length of the infection. Citrus fruits are the
most commonly known source of Vitamin C! It
can be found in vegetables such as broccoli,
ginger, tomatoes and potatoes.
Ginger is an easy and versatile vegetable to
incorporate into your diet and in turn aid your
immunity system. Honey is another delicious
addition to your diet which is high in antioxi-
dants and anti-inflammatories. A teaspoon of
raw, pure honey goes a long way in helping your
body.
Turmeric powder cannot be dismissed. Fresh
turmeric or in its powdered form contains com-
pounds which reduce inflammation, joint pains
and prevent cold symptoms.
Rohan said, “That was a wonderful lesson. Is there any other
interesting Chinese dynasty?”
Sir Dig-a-Lot said, “Definitely. But let’s keep that for next time.”
"There lived,"says friend Esop, "Some ages ago,
A donkey who had feelings acute, you must know;
This donkey to be jealous, felt strongly inclined,
And for reasons which follow, felt hurt in his mind."
It seems that his master, as I understand,
Had a favorite dog which he fed from his hand.
Nay, the dog was permitted to jump on his knee:
An honor that vexed our poor donkey to see.
"Now," thought he, "What's the reason, I cannot see any,
That I have no favors, while he has so many?
If all this is got by just wagging his tail,
Why I have got one, which I'll wag without fail."
So the donkey resolved to try what he could do
And, determined unusual attentions to show,
When his master was dining, came into the room.
"Good sir!" said his friends, "Why your donkey is come!"
"Indeed!" said their host, great astonishment showing,
When he saw the donkey come, while his tail was a-going;
But who can describe his dismay or fear,
When the donkey reared up, and brayed loud in his ear!
"You rascal get down,—John, Edward, or Dick!
Where are you? make haste, and come here with a stick."
The man roared, the guests laughed, the dog barked, the bell rung:
Coals, poker, and tongs, at the donkey were flung,
Till the blows and the kicks, with combined demonstration,
Convinced him that this was a bad speculation;
So, mortified deeply, his footsteps retrod he,
Hurt much in his mind, but still more in his body."

Ed the donkey had lived on a farm his
whole life. His best friend was a goat
named Iggy. They didn't live on just some
ordinary farm. In this farm, they were free
to roam as they pleased and wander
about with no restrictions. One after-
noon, a new member was added to the
farm, a little brown and white dog!

Complete
the Story...
Donkeys are very strong and are stronger than a horse of the same size.
Donkeys are more independent in their thinking than horses and
will reason, then make decisions based on their safety.
They have an incredible memory – they can recognise areas and other
donkeys they were with up to 25 years ago..
They live in a herd and will groom each other in the same way as monkeys and chimps do.

  • 2. Once, a donkey called Gopu lived in the hills. One day, Gopu was happily munching on the grass of the lush green meadow. Gopu was so engrossed in eating the green patch of grass that he did not notice anything in his surroundings. Suddenly while eating, he lifted his head and was shocked to see Shikari right in front of him. Shikari was a wolf. Gopu realized that he needed to quickly think of an idea or else the wolf would devour him. At once, Gopu started making sounds, “Oohhh, ahhh, it’s hurting so bad!” Unable to understand anything, Shikari asked him what was wrong. Gopu began to limp and said,“A sharp thorn has pierced through my foot while I was walking on the bushes, now I am in terrible pain, will you please remove it for me?” “Why do you think I would do that?” asked Shikari, and thought to himelf how foolish the donkey must be.“I am waiting to eat him up and he wants me to remove a thorn from his foot,” thought Shikari. “Shikari, it is for your benefit that I am asking you to take out the thorn,” said Gopu. “What benefit will I get by helping you?”asked Shikari. “The thorn is very big and sharp. When you eat me, it will get stuck in your throat and will hurt you badly.” Shikari thought for a moment and then agreed to do what Gopu said. Gopu lifted his foot for Shikari, and as soon as Shikari came close to his feet, Gopu kicked Shikari with all his strength and galloped away swiftly. Shikari was blinded by the force of the kick and he also lost some teeth. “Serves me right. Why did I even listen to the donkey instead of eating him up right away? It is so foolish of me,”Shikari thought to himself, and quietly limped away from there. FOLKTALE Panchatantra: The Donkey Monkeys Around
  • 3. Arrange the Pieces to Create the Picture Pondering Corner Do Animals Feel Emotions? Emotions can be defined as a conscious mental reaction which comes in the form of strong feelings usually felt towards or because of a particular object. This can cause a variety of changes in the body. To study emotions better, scientists divide these reactions into three categories – physiological, psychological and behavioural. Charles Darwin was the first scientist to suggest that animals had emotions, much like humans, However, his theories were disregard- ed until recently. Scientists are now suggesting after extensive research, that animals do feel a certain range of emotions. These emotions – such as fear and love influence an animal’s behaviour and lead them to make decisions. New research shows that animals can have physiological reactions to emotions (Example: an increase in heart rate) and behavioural reactions to emotions (Example: their hair stands up). Conclusive proof is yet to be discovered that animals can think deeply into their emo- tions and have psychological reactions. Research has shown that social animals like dogs can read human expressions and react when they see facial expres- sions depicting extreme emotions such as love, fear and anger. Hence, dogs are a highly common support animal.

Take out a pen and paper and make as many words as you can with the letters in the wheel. o E L O A CT C H Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, it has a measurement of 10,582 km squared (4,086 miles squared). Salar de Uyuni is also known as Salar de Tunupa which can be translated from Spanish as ‘salt flat enclosure’. It is located in Potosí in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes and is at an elevation of 3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above mean sea level. The Salar was formed as a result of transfor- mations between several prehistoric lakes. It is covered by a few meters of salt crust. The crust serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium. It contains 50 to 70% of the world’s lithium reserves, which is in the process of being extracted. Whilst some salt is extracted from Salar de Uyuni, it is estimated that the flat contains 10 billion tonnes of salt. Salar de Uyuni has little wildlife, but has 80 species of visiting and migrating birds. These salt flats are a large tourist attraction for people to come and take photos because it makes the salt flat also the largest natural mirror. Sir Dig-a-Lot said, “No problem, Rohan, I will tell you all about it today.” “The Han dynasty is called the golden era in the history of China. It lasted for about 400 years. The Han dynasty existed from 206 BC to 9 AD. The dynasty left such a positive influence that Chinese people call themselves Han after the Han dynasty.”

It is a sea route connecting China and Europe." “One of the first steps he took, was to appoint educated people as advisors in the empire. In order to achieve this, Liu Bang started educational institutes and schools with a system of examinations to get cov- eted jobs in the empire. The major contribution of this dynasty was the invention of paper. Other important discoveries include casting iron, rotation of crops, and the art of acupuncture." “The Han dynasty was established after emperor Qin’s son was overthrown by a peasant revolt. The name Han dynasty came from the river Han in China. The first ruler, Liu Bang changed his name to Han Gaozu.” 7

  • 10. "There lived,"says friend Esop, "Some ages ago, A donkey who had feelings acute, you must know; This donkey to be jealous, felt strongly inclined, And for reasons which follow, felt hurt in his mind." It seems that his master, as I understand, Had a favorite dog which he fed from his hand. Nay, the dog was permitted to jump on his knee: An honor that vexed our poor donkey to see. "Now," thought he, "What's the reason, I cannot see any, That I have no favors, while he has so many? If all this is got by just wagging his tail, Why I have got one, which I'll wag without fail." So the donkey resolved to try what he could do And, determined unusual attentions to show, When his master was dining, came into the room. "Good sir!" said his friends, "Why your donkey is come!" "Indeed!" said their host, great astonishment showing, When he saw the donkey come, while his tail was a-going; But who can describe his dismay or fear, When the donkey reared up, and brayed loud in his ear! "You rascal get down,—John, Edward, or Dick! Where are you? make haste, and come here with a stick." The man roared, the guests laughed, the dog barked, the bell rung: Coals, poker, and tongs, at the donkey were flung, Till the blows and the kicks, with combined demonstration, Convinced him that this was a bad speculation; So, mortified deeply, his footsteps retrod he, Hurt much in his mind, but still more in his body." stories in rhyme The Jealous Donkey 9
