RAJ BALASUBRAMANIAN
http://mobileraj.github.io
Building on his expertise delivering large scale solutions for customers, Raj now leads IBM Mobile-
First product portfolio as an offering manager driving the overall strategy of mobile on IBM Cloud. He
successfully transformed an on-premise focused offering into several cloud properties as SaaS and
MBaaS offerings on IBM Cloud. His understanding of the mobile business, combined with his strong
technical background and key market analysis lead to the shifts in investments at the portfolio level for
IBM. He successfully transitioned from application development, to running a datacenter, consulting
on Portal/SOA/BPM technologies and eventually moving back into product engineering/architecture
in 2011. He has great success in working with design and engineering teams, collaborating on key
business objects and solving real user problems. His passion for delivery and execution is matched by
his enjoyment in breaking down large problems into iteratable chunks and getting frequent feedbacks
from his stakeholders to improve the delivery timelines.
Experience
2015 Offering & Portfolio lead for MobileFirst, IBM Cloud
• Initiated the transformation of the on-premise mobile business to cloud
as part of IBM Bluemix. This included basic set of MBaaS, mobile mid-
dleware and location based services from portfolio strategy and invest-
ment plan to working with development, design and product manage-
ment to execute on the strategy.
• Oversaw go to market messaging, development prioritization, overall
portfolio roadmap and cloud-first focus as part of this transformation.
• Worked across IBM Cloud’s engineering team to create a new style of
building mobile and web apps by composing events from Bluemix ser-
vices. This involved convincing management on the value of this style
of building apps and how it actually monetizes core cloud properties as
well as creates a drag on other services.
• Instrumental in open sourcing the client SDKs for the mobile services on
Github as part of IBM Developer Works Open program.
• Represented MobileFirst VP & GM in various forums within IBM senior
management as well as with customers, in presenting the overall Mo-
bileFirst materials and mobile properties on IBM Bluemix.
• Managed a team of product managers as well as working across various
IBM business units to help drive the strategy
• Worked with technical leadership team to help with Enterprise Swift
efforts as part of swift.org and building an offering around the Swift
language.
• Worked with business development team to identify partnership and ac-
quisition opportunities for IBM Cloud.
• Continued helping sales and field services team to close deals in the
quarter end, consultative solution selling around mobile apps and jump-
ing into critical situations to diffuse potential losses.
2014 STSM MobileFirst Product Manager, IBM MobileFirst
• Owned the product definition and execution around mobile services on
the newly opened IBM Bluemix. With IBM’s foray into PaaS, I lead a
subset of the MobileFirst team to deliver key mobile services when IBM
Bluemix went live. I owned the service definition from initial design,
pricing and development execution via the product managers that re-
ported to me. These mobile services were instrumental in bringing new
customers both from the startups and traditional enterprise customers.
• Continued to support on-premise offering around rebranding and various
customer and public presentations and support situations.
• Lead the Apple/IBM partnership work around the mobile platform to
support the iOS apps being built out of the partnership. This in-
volved working with Apple/IBM team, refining requirements and ensur-
ing the right services to support the requirements were available on IBM
Bluemix
• Worked closely with marketing to craft mobile-lead demos for Bluemix
announce at IBM Pulse and Impact events. This work required coordi-
nating with partners like Twilio and Square and then coming up with a
wow demo that could be realized with some emphasis on live coding to
showcase the value of Bluemix to developers.
• Was instrumental to help bring Cloudant into the fold of the larger IBM
family in three key ways, following its acquisition - to include in the core
mobile scenarios and make it part of the MBaaS story, to bring them to
on-premise clients using Cloudant Local via the MobileFirst Platform of-
ferings and championing their geo functionality which was nascent and ill
understood within the company. Subsequently, I helped bring Cloudant
to few key sales deals to differentiate the solution our partners and
sellers were proposing.
2013 Product Design and Architecture, IBM MobileFirst
• Transitioned from a pure development lead role to a product design and
architecture role, where I was the product owner for several new fea-
tures introduced in the Worklight product through the year. This work
involved adopting the newly introduced IBM Design Thinking into the
development process within the local team.
• Help define the requirement from conception to customer validation on
the need and value to design of the feature both from UX and technical
design standpoint through to successful deployment of the functions.
This included
1. An update to mobile usage analytics feature by making it support op-
erational and troubleshooting usecases for mobile devs and admins. This
work involved rearchitecting the feature from a data warehouse only sub-
system to also support Elastic Search and custom reports and UI that
went with it.
2. added the ability to provision X.509 certificates to mobile devices scoped
to user/app or device as part of the app install process. This helped
customers to not rely on MDM vendors for app-specific certificate based
authentications.
3. expanded the way Worklight manages the device features it collects by
adding a way for admins to enable disable apps on lost devices and pro-
viding an API for customers to expose this to their end users. The server
console provided a 360* view of the user and devices they used from
which the admin can manage apps/devices.
4. expanded the local storage feature to support native APIs along with
supporting FIPS140-2 compliance for on-device storage for
5. Datapower integration
• Lead the adoption of the newly introduced IBM Design practices into
product development. Helped mentor new designers in their design
boot camps by providing real-world projects for them to get their expe-
rience.
• Represented the newly formed IBM MobileFirst Platform offerings to
customers and partners and continued my consultative skills to help
sales teams to close the deals through the year.
2012 Product Architecture and Engineering, IBM MobileFirst
• Was core part of the team to take the recently acquired Worklight prod-
uct and make it a flagship product within the mobile app platform seg-
ment. Lead the product architecture and engineering work of
1. protecting mobile traffic using WebSphere Application Server security by
leveraging two different models oa protection
2. basic mobile usage analytics using a simple star schema and the use of
Eclipse BIRT project to view the reports
3. custom integration point in Worklight to connect with Cast Iron which
was key to the bundling of the two products
4. configuration extension between Worklight and IBM Secure Access Man-
ager to protect mobile traffic using the ISAM proxy
5. a true offline store for Worklight leveraging MongoDB API and sqlite on
the device to support offline and disconnected usecases for mobile
6. product changes to Worklight to make it work well with Good Technol-
ogy to help position Worklight with mutual customers
7. Cordova based JS APIs for all the features with underlying implementa-
tion in C#,Java,Objective-C for multi-platform support of mobile devices.
• Lead the overall mobile app security discussions with customers both
around helping sell by eductaing them on what was needed to deploy
mobile apps securely as well as by architect solutions using existing set
of technologies they already had with Worklight.
• Supported several key early customers of Worklight to ensure success-
ful deployments
• Worked across timezones between Israel, Europe and India to ensure
constant collaboration and communication in ensuring continuity of the
Worklight product
